Verified Reviewer |Ask for Itemized Pricing if You Want Transparency
- - Low initial estimate; higher labor and service fees after I supplied parts.
- - Coils and plugs billed separately, then fixed price about 3x labor.
I raised the over pricing issues with the business owner and he suggested I take my business elsewhere which I did. I also filed an official report with the industry oversight authority.
When his initial estimate came in with suspiciously low parts pricing, I sourced my own OEM-quality components (Bosch, Delphi, NGK) and asked for a labor-only quote.
That's when things got odd his hourly rate jumped 20% and his service fees went up 25%, seemingly to recoup the markup he'd lost on parts.
The bigger issue was the hours. He quoted three hours for a fuel pump replacement on this car a job that RepairPal and NAPA book at 1.21.5 hours, with top-side access right under the rear seat.
I watched someone complete it on YouTube in 18 minutes. His quote stated I'd be required to pay for the full three hours regardless of how long it actually took.
He also wanted to bill separately for ignition coils and spark plugs two jobs that are physically the same task on this engine. You cannot touch one without doing the other. After combining them into one job, he insisted on fixed pricing which came out to nearly 3x what labor should be.
When I questioned any of this, he became dismissive and told me to go elsewhere.
Reading other reviews, I wasn't surprised this seems to be a pattern.
Danny's business model works best if you don't know your car. If you do, you'll spot the problems fast.
- Random and unfair pricing
- Lack of transparency
Preferred solution: Apology
User's recommendation: There are more experienced mechanics in Chico.

Carol. I am sorry to hear that you had a frustrating experience with me.
I have actually been meaning to reach out regarding this issue. Between the first time we worked together and when you asked me to do this job I have actually raised my rates from $80 an hour to $100 an hour and my mobile fee from $40 to $50. I leave previous customers at my old rate for 6 months after raising, as a courtesy, but I don't always remember everyone who worked with me before I changed my rates. In terms of the "suspiciously low parts cost" I simply don't charge as much as shops do, because I don't like to overcharge people.
I always source quality parts, so to not cause issues down the road. I also get commercial pricing, which customers, like you, are un-aware of, which is another factor that contributes to the low parts cost. Also, the sparkplugs and ignition coils are billed and charged as separate jobs because they have separate liabilities for me as a mechanic. I mention all this to basically say; if you don't like the quote, don't go with me for this service.
I have a different pricing structure, but that doesn't mean I'm trying to be dishonest. I am still way more affordable than any local shop. No shop in the area is going to come to you, do a fuel pump replacment, sparkplug and ignition coil replacement, AND induction service on a European luxury car for the price that I gave you. Also, my hourly rate reflects the fact that I take longer to do work, because I am MOBILE and can not take every single tool that a shop has with me to every job.
Lastly, I was never "dismissive" or telling you to "go elsewhere" I simply told you that this is my pricing structure, and I am VERY clear with my terms in my quote, which is why you were able to see it. I do flat rates pricing, I'm not your hourly employee. So, to anyone reading this, please understand the context and situation.
Carol's issue was with my pricing structure, not the actual price. I always try to make sure my customers understand the structure, the work I'm doing, and WHY I'm doing it.
