Good work, But no Follow up
They built a $30K deck and porch for me, and the work was very good, no complaints. HOWEVER be sure that all details are complete before paying, because ounce you pay if issues come up expect NO attention.
I still have a very misaligned screen door and they've promised to come out to fix for months (and the dogs keep opening it and getting out) - we're "on the list" but it seems if you've already paid, then warranty is not a priority for them.
But when you haven't paid yet they do good work. Mike is quite a "salesman" as well!
Deck is rotting away
10 years ago Coy construction built a multi-level cedar deck for us. At the time the construction seemed professional.
All the cedar is now rotting and will need to be replaced. In addition, the substructure, which should be treated lumber, is also rotting. We have sealed and stained the deck with quality products every two years and it is still deteriorating. First of all, I will never use cedar again for anything and don't understand why Coy recommended it in the first place.
Second, the structural lumber shouldn't rot after ten years (it is above ground). I question whether is was even treated. A deck should last more than 10 years. I have had wooden sea walls last 20 years or longer.
I never called Coy about my problems since it is partly my own fault for agreeing to cedar in the first place so I can't comment on his customer service.
Just be warned, don't use cedar and always check the stamps on the treated lumber to make sure they are using the right lumber. Contractors have a way of using cheaper materials when you're not looking.
Short Review on June&nbs-04:00;09,&nbs-04:00;2016
Build our cedar deck approx 15 years ago using interior grade nails which have now completely rusted and have caused our entire deck to rot.
Horrible Workmanship Review
Same, didn't properly support our deck and realized they were not going to be level and decided to add 2x2's under the boards to compensate for being off from the rest of the deck.
Horrible workmanship, DON'T hire them
After 4 years ($18,000) warped deck - no help from builder
I hired Coy Construction in Walled Lake, MI to build our high-end $18,000 deck 4 years ago.
Several of the wooden joists have badly warped and we called Mike McCoy, Coy's owner, to advise us on how to repair.
He showed up in a huge hurry, no greeting, took a quick look at the deck and denied that it was warped and very uneven. Finally he said that decks are never even, and rushed off, never to be heard from again.
Very poor business practice - no follow-up (by the way, we were willing to pay for the repair). Poor quality materials - find another deck builder. I will never recommend him for anything.

I hope others see this and do not use Coy Construction. Sounds like he built a very substandard deck.
He should have used KDAT as the structural wood. It is much more stable.
He should go out o business.
