hope there’s a special place in *** for insurance contractors who scam people who have just been traumatized by severe home damage. Because Mike Downey, owner of Complete Construction, will find a place there with his name on it.

I hired Downey in late June 2019 on the recommendation of a restoration company that had done a good job drying out my house after a refrigerator leak. He said the job would take three days. He negotiated for a higher price from the insurance company, claiming areas that weren’t impacted by the flood needed to be replaced. Then he didn’t replace those areas. He also used the damaged cork flooring, rather than buying new from Lowe’s. He claimed the colour of the cork flooring was “much lighter” than when it was installed four years ago and wouldn’t match the areas we weren’t replacing. Like a fool, I believed him.

He brought a big crew and on the first day after seven hours, he pronounced the $5200 job “completely done.” Again, foolishly, I paid him. The next morning as I was cleaning up the mess he’d left behind I noticed a gouge in the floor and paint spatters on the walls. I drove to Lowe’s and realized he had lied about the color of the flooring: it was exactly the same.

A week after he was done I found a pool of water in the garage. The new refrigerator, which he had plumbed, was leaking. He said it wasn’t his job to check the connection in the garage.

He redid a portion of the job. Only after I bought a new stove did I realize he had never replaced the flooring under the stove, which he had been paid to do. He was willing to come back and do it but I was not. I had had enough of this deceitful crook.

Bottom line: this is a company that will cut corners and hope you don’t notice. If they had a slogan it would be “Western NC’s number one choice for second rate work. “
