I will never shop at Wegmans again. I am 47 years old and was visiting from Canada.

I walked over to the Wegmans to get a 6pack and some sushi and the woman asked for my drivers license. I said sure. She looks at it and asks for my passport. I said no, i dont carry my passport to the grocery store and was told my canadian drivers license is not acceptable.

Obviously they are not interested in the tourist dollar and i will make a point of never shopping there again! Their rules are ridiculous and ignorant when coming from an 17 year old cashier!

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Location: Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Hello,

We're sorry to disappoint. Unfortunately, this is part of our 100% Proofing Policy.

Thank you for writing about our 100% proofing policy.

We know not all of our customers agree with our position; however, it is always a matter of concern when even one of our customers is unhappy.

We have carefully weighed all of the factors involved with this decision, and ultimately we concluded that this is the right thing to do for our people and our company, as well as our customers and the community. No matter what age we chose as the standard for proofing - 21, 25, 30 - in the end the judgment call was still an arbitrary one. We have decided that in fairness to our employees, who face serious personal liability if they are involved with an underage sale, that this was a step we needed to take. The decision whether or not to permit the sale of alcohol to an individual who does not present proof of age now lies in the hands of management, who will bear the responsibility for making the ultimate call.

Our policies and procedures are designed to help our employees succeed as well as to do what is best for our customers and the communities in which we live.

If you feel this is an intrusion or inconvenience, we hope you will find our service in every other regard enough to offset your disappointment.

Please know that we do want to hear from our customers with their concerns, and we thank you for giving us this opportunity to explain the rationale for our decision.

Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact Wegmans Consumer Affairs at 1-800 WEGMANS ext 4760 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm and refer to Case #123****. Thank you Wegmans Consumer Affairs
