I went to a nearby Petco location (St. Louis) for a rabies vac for my Lab shepherd mix as I always do.

It is less expensive than a regular vet but this experience may change my mind and wallet. I decided to go in the very last hour thinking most of the dogs would be there and gone. Wrong. There were about 10 dogs left at 6:15 lined up and we were there until closing at 7 and after.

The wait was very stressful for my 11 y/o lab along with other small and large dogs there who barked and caused a lot of ruckus. The vet was so slow one customer said vet school was faster! She only got a little better and moved things along when we all made negative comments that the wait was ridiculous and it shouldn't take that long for a 5 second vaccination. She was giving each dog an exam that the other vets other years did not do.

If Vetco is going to give each dog an exam plus the paperwork plus the shot, they have to have more than one vet at each location. My dog was so stressed and panting and upset, I thought she was going to have a heart attack. She is 11 y/o and that could happen when they aren't used to that kind of stress. From thinking it would be an easy trip to Petco for a rabies vac., it was a horrible, stressful, unnecessary ordeal.

I don't think I will do this again. The Humane Society is nearby and it will only take 15 minutes. I cannot say enough how unnecessary and trying and difficult it was to have my dog get vaccinated. The only good thing was somebody from Petco offered the dogs water because she could tell everybody was tired, panting and stressed.

isn't there a better way to have our dogs get a 5 second shot than have to wait over an hour? One lady said she was there since 5:00 and it was past 7. That is over 2 hours. There is no excuse for this.

None. I think I will make other arrangements for my dog. It is 2 days later from this horrible ordeal and she is still tired and not herself. There has to be 2 vets when they know more than 30 dogs come to that location.

There has to be!!

Never again.

Reason of review: Much too long waiting time..

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri

i second the first comment; if your pet's health and well-being are number one (& they ought to be!) then a full-service, one-on-one, scheduled appointment time with a privately practicing veterinarian sounds best for your lab at this life stage.

also: veterinarians (by law, moral, and ethical codes and/or oaths taken MUST examine a patient prior to vaccinating said patient.) people are also sue happy and always looking to make a quick buck and sadly, this has impacted the veterinary field substantially.

vets have a license to look out for and to protect, and they NEED to practice good medicine...your pet deserves this at minimum!

a "five minute vaccination" is often a 45 minute ordeal when it involves a cursory examination, blood draw, paperwork, deworming, ensuring the right patient gets the right treatments, & so on, and so forth.

ALSO, fun fact: dogs don't have heart attacks.

atherosclerosis is essentially non-existent in dogs, although it's the leading cause of heart attacks in humans. a dog can suffer from cardiac arrest, or arrhythmia, but their hearts aren't stopping due to a traditional heart attack.

This is a clinic that does shots and blood draws . It is stressful and a long wait so if you have a older dog please do whats best for your dog and bring to a full service.
