Subaru Of America - Oil consumption, short block replaced
2013 Forester, purchased new. Dealer replaced short block a month ago.
New engine making a loud whinning noise. They told me it was the alternator pulley, so they replaced it. WRONG. So then they said it was the oil pump and replaced it along with the timming cover.
WRONG. Then called me to say they are going to remove the oil pan and check in there. Apparently that didn't do it. Now latest call was to let me know they were ordering a new timming chain.
It is obvious to me they are only guessing at what the problem is. I am not really interested in making payments on a car with a FRANKENMOTOR in it. Contacted Corp. Subaru twice about trading up to a new car without losing my investment in the 2013.
Got an email back from them saying they will get back to me, "Right".
Currently own two Foresters, a 10 and the 13. Am still a loyal customer, but no longer feeling the "LOVE"
Reason of review: Damaged or defective.
Monetary Loss: $3000.
Preferred solution: Price reduction.
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Any update on whether or not the issue was fixed? I found a decent looking 2013 but I don't want to get into a huge problem waiting to happen.
DO NOT DO IT. I have the same problem. Subaru wonโt fix it
I have 2013 Forester w 56K miles .. I today failed the oil consumption test.
Subaru will be installing a new short block starting Jan 30, 2017.
This seems like a good thing!
Anything I should be weary/aware of??? thanks

RE: You may NOT be getting what you think is a good deal with the short block replacement-been there @28K now have 68K and oil consumption is back! Burned 1 1/2 qts/1200 miles.
This is only a band aid solution as your cats will start throwing codes as the oil contaminates them. A new complete engine and cats MIGHT be the answer? You will definitely have a hard sell to SOA to get what you need, as they will blame your driving habits for the oil consumption! Does this mean your problems are over?
I highly doubt it-they are only trying to stop a complete recall on the 2011-14 models which would have cost them more $$$. Thy are only skirting the REAL issue-ask for a new 80K warrantee with whatever you get as you deserve it!
I'm having a similar issue with a 2011 forester and feel the same way. What is the value of my car at this point?
They replaced the short block 3 1/2 weeks ago. I have gotten it back twice, but it keeps misfiring and has to go back. The latest is that the computer is bad and they are replacing it, but I have to wait for one from Japan. They tell me that it's just a coincidence.
I'm not even sure I want it back at this point.
Did you ever get a response from Subaru? How did it work out?
