My first experience with the rental car company, Sixt, was little more than an annoyance. I soon found, however, that it was just one of several fiascoes to come. I made my reservation online and headed to the West Palm Beach airport location. The agent informed me my reservation was not with that location, and sent me to the downtown station. After driving through city traffic, I discovered this location was closed. No signs, no explanations. I headed back to the airport location, where the agent "kindly" honored my reservation. No formal apology. Only excuses. The vehicle was brand new, the ride was comfortable. My troubles were forgotten after the first few dozen miles.

I rented several more vehicles without incident, and my faith was restored; until I rented a car to go out of state. Many car rental companies prohibit travel outside of the state of rental; something I was fully aware of. A few rentals before the out-of-state trip, I confirmed with a station agent that their vehicles can be taken outside of Florida. What the agent neglected to tell me was WHICH states are permitted. In this case Alabama and Georgia. Long story and $915.00 mileage charge later, I'm starting to see a pattern of agents perhaps not being very familiar with the operations of the company. Several weeks and many emails later, Sixt regrets to inform me that they will not be refunding the mileage charge; regardless of misinformation and employee ineptness.

Nevertheless, vehicles are always in order, prices are great - I try again a few days later.

My mother flew in from Germany for my brother's birthday, and a family reunion in Alabama. Given my recent interactions with Sixt, my credit card was a little low on funds, and I needed another payment option to get my mother to Alabama to be with her grand-kids and great-grand-daughter. The phone customer service agent assured me I could make the payment at pick-up. I made a reservation for the Sunrise Blvd location in Ft. Lauderdale. With the agent's assurance, I drove an hour and half to meet my mother and pick up the car. The agent at the Sixt desk told me I would need to show proof of residency with an FPL statement and another piece of mail. I informed this agent that the phone agent made no mention of having to show any sort of proof, and that I had just driven 1 1/2 hours and did not have access to a bill. She agreed that an FPL online statement would suffice. The desk agent then called her supervisor (this person was not on the premises), who promptly overruled the agent's decision.

Another long story later - grand-kids and great-grandmother didn't make the reunion. Sixt's response? Nothing for nearly a month. When I reminded them of their very sad state of customer affairs, I was told "Please accept our deepest apology concerning both negative experiences you encountered with SiXT. Missing an event as important as a family reunion or disappointing children is never a good thing."
