Watch out! I was alone at the Shanghai zoo just 2 days before i was supposed to return to the US. 2 girls approached me and started chatting with me and explaining the animals in english, and what the signs said. I thought they were just being nice, and i was completely caught off guard because nobody else reported being solicited for a tea scam at the shanghai zoo, So i quickly believed them when they said they were tourists from some northern chinese town. I also do not speak a lick of chinese, so how was i supposed to know?

We walked around the zoo a while together and they just kept explaining things in english. I asked to take a picture of them, or with them at least 10 times but they kept saying they do not enjoy taking pictures and it was against their religion. I am so ***..... I should have known right there it was a scam.... Any way, about the 10th time I asked, they finally sheepishly agreed to allow me to take a picture OF them. But not WITH them.

We got to the entrance of the zoo and they were acting like they were going to say goodbye but then they asked me if i had a little time to go for tea with them. These girls were EXCELLENT at running this scam, and performing... Because this entire time I had NO idea they were attempting to do this to me. I agreed, and we walked for about 10 minutes to a street, then went down another street and finally ended up at a tea house... I forget the name of it. And I did not take a picture of it. I was too much in a haste to get out of the area after I exited the tea house.

Inside the tea house, I did not see another red flag. The people there seemed awfully acquainted with these supposed tourists.... I should have noticed that then, instead of now, then it might have saved me a little money! They showed me tea lists... and yada yada.. you know what happens next.

We just chatted and then the bill came....

2600 RMB

My jaw dropped. They of course agreed to help pay....

Anyway, long story short, I never had time to go back and confront them.. as i was leaving back to the US... and plus, i could not remember where to go even if i tried.

Just be careful! Be aware that the tea scam can happen ANYWHERE! Even in the Shanghai zoo.. as I found out...

The girls picture I will attach below. If you see them, let them know about this post....
