I took my Mini Cooper to Safelite to get door glass replaced because they could get it done next day and they guarantee their work. When arriving the rep at safelite told me it would take 45 minutes. About an hour into I started to wonder, and walked back in the shop to see what was going on. Found out that the rep was having a hard time installing the glass as the Mini Copper doors are so intricate. Needless to say the rep had to take the door apart/put it back together 3 times just to get the window to sort of function properly. After several attempts the rep could not figure out why the window was going up and reset itself half way back down. We thought it must be some kind of issue where the car does not realize the new glass. I called local mini to try to talk with a rep because we thought it was a computer issue (Mini wouldnt let me speak with any techs). Needless to say by this time the Safelite rep had spent about 3 hours on my car and were a few jobs behind with customers waiting around.

Safelite Rep & manager told me to use it for a few days and see if it would "fix itself" if not I'd have to go to Mini Cooper. The Rep at Safelite admitted to me he could not figure out what was going on, and through some bottles of foam window cleaner in my car because he felt bad that he/nor his manager could figure it out.

I got my insurance involved because if i were to have to pay a Mini rep it would be over my deductible. Julio from Impex auto of Tampa (High end auto tech specializing in BMW & MIni's) looked at the car and all the issue's were a Safelight workmanship issues.

Safelight workmanship issue's

1. The window resetting itself half way down was due to the fact that the window track was not installed correctly by the safelight rep. It was causing pressure on the window which the car saw as a safety issue and was resetting itself back down.

2. The in door mirror controls were installed by the Safelite rep backwards. Therefore, the left position was controlling the right and right the left.

3. There was still glass left in door, The Impex Tech had to take everything back apart to re-vacuum the remaining glass out of the door the Safelite Rep did not address

4. There were screws missing from the door panel

5. There was a 4x4 inch pile of glass left behind the driver seat, and glass left in the seat track blocking it's movement.

6. The door lock indicator was not installed back by the Saelite rep. Therefore it was making noise as there was not correct tension on the indicator. When locking and unlocking the car the indicator was not moving.

I paid for Safelite to clean up the glass, install new glass, and get my window to it's pre-loss condition which they could not complete. The Rep and manager both admitted to me they did not know how to fix the issue and were very apologetic, yet I'm stuck with figuring it out. All this Safelite stated to me was a Mini Issue. No this isn't a Mini issue, this is a Saflite workmanship issue. Safelite supposedly guarantee's their work but seems will use any reason not too.

Safelight should not have taken the job. It would not be a problem if their reps or managers do not know how to fix Mini door glass but do not take the job and do not charge the customer to do a job you cannot complete.

Yourdad, safelites quote includes cleanup and install of new glass. It doesn't come down to what they are charging, it comes down to their techs not caring.

joe smith I'll take the *** comment as a compliment

no auto glass shop will detail your car we do the best we can to get the most of the glass out of your car ..as for inside the door ..todays cars you cant get your hand inside the door let alone a vacum ...we didnt break your glass we are there to put it in ..mini cooper doors are so cheap ..2 round plastic carriers hold it in place since there is no frame ..20 years of dealing with this ***

-To last poster

=I understand they aren't going to get small slivers of glass and I have had the car detailed since the vandalism. But a 4 inch/1inch high pile of glass? Come on dude, thats not detailing thats being lazy and lack of attention

=Has nothing to do with being cheap. If Safelite tells me they can complete the job and return my car to its pre-loss condition why would I look other places? I'm by no means a mechanic, I'm a consumer who got taken advantage of. Had I known Safelite could not complete the job or that the Mini doors were this complicated I would of taken it to a dealer. But the company told me they could return my car to it's pre-loss condition, would clean all the glass out of the door/car and would guarantee their work. With that statement I had no need to look anywhere else

To update everyone, The door and window functioning is now fixed from Safelite workmanship issues. My insurance company had to pay out for 2.5 hrs of labor and are subrogating Safelite for the additional work to correct their mistakes

the "techs" at Safelite have little to no experience, never mind the fact they use the worst/cheapest glass they can to service their customers. NO car should have visible glass left behind after a piece of glass has been replaced, of course they dont "detail" the vehicle, but at least it should be cleaned/vacuumed. The mistakes pointed out to this customer after it was taken to another place just shows the poor work performed daily at Safelite.....and 2 cans of glass cleaner just doesnt help after the damage has been done

those guys are glass guys not a detail shop glass in door yes get that. anywhere else take and have it detailed

I called Saflite on 2-3 because my windshield was cracked, the installer was given the wrong information and couldn't fix it. The next day another installer came with the wrong wind shield, and today 2-9 it was finally installed and this windshield is faulty.561 504 ****

Joe Smith is obviously a mindless hater and/or a Safelite employee. Nice rebuttal, Joe. You represent Safelite about as well as can be expected.

Almost every reputable glass business (NOVUS Glass, Glass Doctor and Harmon) offer warranties on their glass work and most work with all the insurance companies. Safelite is using deceitful messaging if they made you believe that they are the only glass company offering these benefits to customers. I am sorry to hear about your issues and hope this has been resolved.

Nice comment Joe Smith.....

The comment above is exactly right. The mini-cooper does have some quirky door window systems. However the resets can be performed. Another way it can be manually reset is to remove the motor assembly and re-insert it before installing the new window. I have done this several times myself. This is one of the more difficult door glass installations there is. However if you know what you are doing it can be accomplished.

I would have assumed had the tech and manager not know how to install the part, that Safelite would have had a tech support phone# he could have called to seek help from Safelite Corporate offices? Wouldn't you think that would be part of their SafeTech training program? Maybe that doesn't exist?
