I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with a factory paint job that is defective primarily the hood. The prep to make the paint stick to the hood was not properly applied.

When I first took it to the dealer they told me I was within time for warranty coverage but over on miles. A defect is a defect and should be take care if by Hyundai. See photos for how unsightly this is for Hyundai and me. I would not be so pissed if this were due to normal wear and tear, but it is not.

I am pleased with the performance and service with my Sonata. I have 195k miles on it already, with only normal maintenance issues except this poor paint job that I want Hyundai to admit is an issue with their white paint.

Monetary Loss: $1000.

Location: Opelika, Alabama

The paint on my white 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport just peeled off of the roof above the windshield on the passenger side after a hard rain while I was parked for work. It has peeled down to the metal and bubbled up all around the peeled area, so it will continue to do so.

I keep my car pristine and in my garage. I have read many other complaints in regards to peeling paint for the same year and model, as well as other Hyundai models, and they all state that it is not covered under warranty. I am beyond livid and plan to fight hard for Hyundai to take care of this without cost to me. Has anyone with this same issue actually had their car repainted by Hyundai without out of pocket expense?

Itโ€™s clearly a BIG issue since there are countless complaints posted on numerous sites and forums. Thank you in advance for any feedback and I will gladly sign a petition. I read that there was a class action lawsuit that was dismissed and I canโ€™t understand why when it is clearly a defect in the paint and should not be the responsibility of the vehicle owner to cover cost for the remedy of a FULL BODY paint job. I donโ€™t want to have to go through this again when the rest starts peeling from other areas if only the roof is repainted and not the whole car.

I have an appointment tomorrow and have already been told by the body shop, of which I was directed to from my Hyundai dealership, that the cost is randomly covered for some and not for others. The gentleman I spoke with finished my sentence for why I was calling before I could even finish explaining my predicament. So, if this is a known DEFECT, which it clearly is, why would the consumer be responsible for remedying it with cost?? Tighten up Hyundai and do what is right by your consumers.

You boast a warranty that out matches your competitors, so you now need to follow through. My car is 4 years old, it shouldnโ€™t look like itโ€™s 15 years old with peeling paint exposing metal that will be rusted over in no time.

I really think we should start a petition or a lawsuit against Hyundai. My car is five years old and looks terrible.

Hyundai Elantra limited pearl white.

Paint is peeling off the hood and roof of my car. Down to the bare metal

I have a 2015 Hyundai Elantra Limited and the paint is peeling off on the hood of my car and the roof. It's down to bare metal.

Help! Been reading forums and there needs to be a recall on the paint.

I am having the same problem and Hyundai will only pay half. What has to happen in order for them to recall this problem?

I own a 2014 Sonata that is also flaking and peeling...I was not notified of a recall ...how can I get this defect covered?

I bought my 2016 Hyundai Sonata limited new 4 years ago, the paint is peeling on the roof and starting to on my hood. Like many others, they are telling me that it is not under warranty.

They knew there was a problem with the paint back then and did nothing about. They should have a recall on the paint and do the right thing.

I shouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars to fix a defect!!! Very annoyed!

supposed to be 141000 miles on my car. My car is also Pearl White

I have a 2008 Sonata with 14100 miles on it and the hood of my car looks like yours. I have no issues other than the unsightly peeling paint.

Guest

I have a 2009 Sonata and I have the peeling paint and rust on the roof and a cracked dash inside my car. Great car but the paint is another issue and the Hyundai people are like so. The color of my car is pearl white.

Guest

same thing here. 2013 Sonata with bubbling paint.

No excuse for this they should repaint these regardless of warranty. Never buy these cars again.

Same here. 2017 Elantra Pearl white.

The roof is peeling in 6 different places and Hyundai won't do anything about it. I am livid to say the least.

I will never buy another Hyundai. I will make sure everyone knows they sell garbage.

My daughter's 2013 Hyundai Pearl White Elantra is doing the same. Got the same story from Hyundai...out of warranty so no repair made. Hyundai sucks

I have the same problem with my Santa Fe Sport. The roof paint is peeling off and the dealership wants to charge me $2,200.00 but that includes painting my hood because of rock chips.

A body made told me that he has seen many Hyundai with the same problem with the roof peeling. He said that the primer was not put on right which cause UVB problems.

Same here. 2016 pearl white.

Bought it new....and now it's chipping on roof and hood. What can we do about this?

I just went to wash my 2015 Hyundai Veloster (

I have the same thing happening to my 2017 Elantra Limited. Itโ€™s white.

The dealership said that itโ€™s damage from a rock that caused the clear coat to come off and water to get under the paint. Plus, the service โ€œmanagerโ€ always properly rude to me. So much so that I literally had to tell him that I was done talking to him. They should just admit the fault and fix it.

I, unlike the poster, am well within the warranty.

They think Iโ€™m dumb. Iโ€™ve never seen this happen to ANY car Iโ€™ve owned whether was new OR heavily used.

Same 2015 white

My 2015 Hyundai Sonata is doing the same thing, and we are pissed. We are older couple and this is our last car, and have taken so much are of it. Hyundai should be ashamed of themselves for this.....they knew...
