ReCaptcha and hCaptcha both require web site users to solve picture problems, and often refresh them and add new images (e.g. "Check new images") to access content or even complete a transaction.

This is disrespectful for the user's time up front and has caused me to not complete intended purchases and, in one case, not complete an intended donation to a charity. (I let the charity know why.) ReCaptcha can fortunately be bypassed with the Buster add-on for browsers but there does not currently seem to be a convenient way to bypass hCaptcha.

More to the point is that both systems appear to have a hidden agenda that is not related to security against 'bots. hCaptcha's own web site says "very time you "click on the car" you are helping to train a single Gigantic company's machine learning systems for free? hCaptcha turns this model around.

When you use hCaptcha, companies bid on the work your users do as they prove their humanity. You get the rewards." hcaptcha.com adds that you can instead donate to charity the money you "earn" from using hCaptcha.

hCaptcha presents "Gigantic" as an apparent stand-in for Google. But pay attention to those last two sentences.

Sites that use hCaptcha are profiting from your unpaid work. This is cause, in my opinion, to (1) not buy from or patronize them, (2) tell them why, and (3) give them bad online recommendations.

The Register adds, "Don't give it away, give it away, give it away now, bot busting biz tells reCAPTCHA data serfs" describes how companies can save money by forcing users to solve ReCaptcha puzzles to enhance image recognition systems instead of paying them to do so through Mechanical Turk.

User's recommendation: Refuse to patronize web sites with ReCaptcha and especially hCaptcha, and let them know why.

hCaptcha Cons: Waste of web site visitor time, Disrespect for web site visitors, Monetization of web site visitor time.
