In 2001, BB&T acquired FCNB Corp. of Frederick, Md., and First Spartan Financial Corp. of Spartanburg, S.C. (both were completed in March). Since 1989, BB&T has acquired 60 community banks and thrifts, over 85 insurance agencies, as well as 35 non-bank financial services companies.
In 2006, FCNB completed the acquisitions of First Citizens Bancorp of Cleveland, Tenn. and Main Street Banks Inc. of Atlanta, Ga.
