1/25/10I called the number on CharterSpecialDeals.com (or something like that) and talked to operator #1 for 45 minutes. The outcome of that call was this: I was told I would not need a modem, I would need to buy a wireless router (or lease one from Charter), my high-speed internet and cable ""with extended channels "like MTV" would be $39.98 for 6 months with no contract, and that I will need to pay a one-time processing fee of $9.95- it was immediately charged to my Visa card. Also, our installation fee for 3 TVs would be $29.99, payable with our first bill. I believe I was talking to a company hired to take orders for Charter and the operator I talked to repeated the same information and phrases to me over and over and didn't seem to listen very well to my questions (or speak English well for that matter.) I went and spent $70 at Wal-Mart on a wireless router. I received the following e-mail shortly after:Thank You For Your Order

1/26/10Received 1 call saying the charter technician would be arriving at 10-12p (scheduled time) and then another later saying they would arrive from 1-3. I cancelled the appointment because I had to go to work and said I would call again soon to reschedule at my convenience.

1/30/ 10I called 1-88*-438-**** to re-schedule ""this time for a different address 1 mile away -as we had an opportunity to move to a remodeled house. I was told that the same promotion of $39.98/mo for 6 months was available at this new address. I was told that the installation fee would be $49.99 plus $9.99 for our 3rd TV. Operator #2 said "because you were quoted $29.99 before, I'll knock off that extra $9.99." I was also told we had to either buy a modem or lease one for $5/mo. We went out and bought one for $100 at Best Buy. I received the following e-mail shortly after:

2/3/10The installation technician arrives. I was told by the technician that since we didn't have existing outlets in the house that we need a release from our landlord to install the cable. I think that might have been a nice detail for the operators on the phone to mention when I made the appointment! My landlord lives in another state. (Also, he told me that we were only getting channels 2-27. NOT MTV and extended channels that we were told by operator #1 on 1/30/10.) The technician said we would need to call and schedule another appointment when we had the form. My boyfriend called a few hours later and asked what kind of notice Charter needs from our landlord. They told him only written notice, there is no specific form. I called the first number and explained the situation. I was promised by operator #3 that by the time I hung up the phone my problem would be solved and I would have my cable and internet. I asked her to confirm that I would be getting extended channels, specifically MTV and "channels like that." She said, "yes, you'll have MTV." I was also told that they wouldn't make me pay the processing fee a second time because I already paid them. 45 minutes laterโ€ฆ I was transferred to an installation department only to be told they are COMCAST installation department and they do not have anything to do with Charter. Yet, they were surprisingly wonderful to deal with and expressed great apology over my situation even though they couldn't help me. I had to hang up with NOTHING ACCOMPLISHED. 45 MINUTES!!!!!THEN, on my Yahoo e-mail at 8:02pm:Thank You For Your Order

2/8/10My boyfriend called again to set up internet and EXTENDED cable and was told the price with be $79.99/mo. The installation fee jumped again from $49.99, according to the last operator, to $120, but he was told that $60 of that would be credited back to our first month's bill. That is still $10.01 higher than the last price we were given for installation. And this was COD, not added to the first bill, as I'd been told before. AND there was no mention of a $9.95 processing fee this time at all. I received this e-mail the next morning with no mention of a first month's credit of $60 or of the extended channels:

Today I found the Charter Code of Conduct in the corporate information listed on their website. This part was particularly interesting to me:A. Several times within this information the "best interest of Charter" is mentioned. It seems that this code of conduct is mostly concerned with what is going to make Charter the most money. Also, there is a mention of recording accurately the results and contracts on Charter's books and records, yet every time I've called there is no record of any of the agreement or prices I've been given before. The public is mentioned once: "the public's right to have accurate information about Charter.." and this is where I feel the majority of the ball-dropping is happening with this company. My whole issue with Charter over the last 2 weeks is that I've been told so many different things, and then not gotten what was promised, and no one remembers anything. Apparently the only information that is recorded in customer accounts is what benefits Charter.

That is what you will pay the technician when he installs the services. That is $30.00 per line of service being installed and the $49.99 install fee. So, through this conversation I learn that no one cares what I've been told in the past, "Now you know," and that my promotion is only for 6 months. I wasn't told this ever before. Considering that this price was so much higher than the promotion I was given on 1/25 I assumed we were paying full price for both services. My mistake was assuming anything. Also, I've never seen anywhere, or been told ever, that after a 6 month promotion ends I would be required to pay full price for the service for 30 days before qualifying for another promotion. I was told with my original offer on 1/25 that there was no contract, and that after the 6 months I could just pick a different promotion. The operator #1 said this was one of the perks.

After this conversation I was more determined than ever not to use Charter's services. I looked at Qwest's website once again and an agent initiated a chat with me this time. I was told that the first time I checked out Qwest that the speeds were low in my area and I didn't think they'd be fast enough. I was assured by an agent that I could even play XBOX live with it. All for $35/mo, (a month-to-month agreement) for one year, with an $8/mo charge to lease a modem/router combination. Their one-time fees were $39.99 for activation and $49.99 for installation. Here in northeast US, you don't get a new promotion, even if you ask (we did four times). The only way to get the teaser rates again is to disconnect for 45 to 60 days.

Then you'll get prospected by mail twice a week and by phone twice a month. If the corporation had just given us the tier we want at a tolerable price, we would still be customers.

I just wanted to comment...I work for the company so I get to see the good, bad and ugly from inside. Charter is probably hands down one of the best companies today.

They dont have contracts, they have the fastest internet out there (30mb-100mb) and the cheapest. regular price: phone- $19.99, internet: 30mb-49.99, and tv- expanded-59.99, silver-79.99, gold-99.99, and the processing fee is now $1.99, including payments where most companies are anywhere from 4-7 bucks usually. also, they DO NOT CHARGE TAX on home phone service and internet.

why you ask? THEY PAY FOR IT. install fees for new customers: $19.99, and $29.99 if your adding a new service that NEEDS a tech to come out to hook up, if were just sendin you a modem....you can plug it into the way and ur computer so only $1.99 for that! They are a great service provider!

They also dont give u a dish to worry about gettin snow on, and the only time your service will ever be out for more than 20 minutes (for upgrading wires in the head end) is if the sun and the moon line up! sorry it screws with out satelites, no ones perfect. Try em, if you dont like em after 30 days then get 100% of your money back INCLUDING ALL INSTALLATION FEES....find a company that can say that! ;D cuz ya cant!

You claim that you were not told that you were in 6 month promotion but a little later in your rant you flat out say "I was told with my original offer on 1/25 that there was no contract, and that after the 6 months I could just pick a different promotion". Also about the $9.95 processing fee that you were charged. That is not a fee done by Charter. That fee is charged by the third party vendor that you went through to get the special.

They charge you $9.95 to talk to them not Charter. They then transfer you to a Charter agent to finalize the deal.
