Advertising Standards Authority is a self-regulatory organization (SRO) of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. It is a non-statutory organization which cannot interpret or enforce legislation. It applies the Advertising Codes, which are written by the Committees of Advertising Practice. The role of Advertising Standards Authority is to regulate the content of advertisements, sales promotions and direct marketing in the UK. The work of the company includes acting on complaints and proactively checking the media to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements. Advertising Standards Authority is not funded by the British Government, but by a levy on the advertising industry. Guy Parker has been Chief Executive of Advertising Standards Authority since June 2009. The organization was created in 1961.
