Children Injured by Defective Chesapeake Hardwood — Manufacturer & Installer Blamed Each Other, Nobody Took Responsibility

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Chesapeake hardwood peeled and chipped; sharp chunks injured feet.
  • - Manufacturer/installer blame; installer abandoned us; Chesapeake unreachable.

We purchased and installed Chesapeake engineered hardwood flooring in our home. Shortly after installation, the flooring began peeling and chipping badly between the planks.

The laminate top layer started breaking off into sharp chunks right on our main living floor where our family walks every day.

Our children and family members have been physically injured. Sharp chunks of the flooring broke off and went directly into our feet and our kids' feet. These are not minor splinters they are pieces of defective flooring that are causing real, painful injuries in our own home.

When we raised this with both the manufacturer (Chesapeake Flooring) and our installer, they blamed each other instead of taking responsibility. The manufacturer said it was an installation problem.

The installer said it was a product defect. Back and forth. Meanwhile, our family kept getting hurt walking on this floor.

The installer abandoned us within 6 months of installation. Chesapeake Flooring is virtually unreachable no working phone support, emails go nowhere.

We have been left completely on our own, dealing with a dangerous, defective floor.

This is not a cosmetic issue.

This is a safety hazard causing physical injury to children.

Based on other reviews I have found, this peeling and chipping is a known, widespread problem with Chesapeake's engineered hardwood product. We are not alone.

We are now taking the following actions:

Filing a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Filing with our State Attorney General's consumer protection office

Consulting a personal injury and product liability attorney

Filing with the Better Business Bureau

I am requesting Chesapeake Flooring contact me immediately to take responsibility and resolve this full floor replacement and acknowledgment of the injuries caused to my family.

Loss:
$8000

Preferred solution: Full refund

Warn people to not waste their money on this product

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Custom Interior Solutions offered limited flooring options.
  • - Peeling occurred within 18 months.
  • - Independent inspection at $450 deemed normal wear.

This was an insurance claim job. Custom interior solutions in St Petersburg, Fl.

only allowed a few options for flooring replacement options, so at the time it didn't occur to me to read reviews because I was not allowed to shop where I chose. This was all about price! My story is exactly the same as the reviews before me. Within 18 months, I noticed the under floor product showing through and peeling.

When i fanally got the name of the place the product was purchased, it sent me on a 15 month journey to finally be told I need an independent inspection priced at 450.00 to tell me it was normal wear and tear to have peeling and splintering because it was a high traffic area. There's nothing normal about walking on a floor that puts splinters in your foot! Do not fall for the price of this product, don't bother trying to use the warranty and most of all don't go down the path of independent inspection!

Call someone to come putty the splints the second you see them and hopefully that will stop the spread, or go to Home Depot your self and do some diy because the warranty is no good anyway and replacing this floor is out of the question for now! Floor and More should STOP selling this product, and shame on the restoration company for pushing me into shady everything!

Loss:
$450
Cons:
  • 50 year warranty is useless

Preferred solution: repair with warranty

User's recommendation: dont do it!!!!!

Terrible Floor

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - After one year, the hardwood floors are failing and edges chip.
  • - 2600 sq ft of this flooring dents.
  • - This is our fourth home and the floors have issues.

We have been in our new home for just one year and already the flooring is falling apart. The edges are chipping and pulling back.

Even thought all of our chairs have felt padding on them the flooring is denting. 2600 square feet of their manufactured hardwood and it is money down the drain. This is our fourth home and the last three have all had wood floors and these are the only ones we have ever had any issue with.

I cant imagine if our kids were still at home. They are doing this with just two middle aged adults living in the home.

Agree. We had our large kitchen and laundry room floors installed in July 2019.

Started to see problems after 2 months, did not report until more issues in other areas of floor appeared. At 6 months after install, I reported issues to the well established local company from whom we purchased and who installed the floors. The flooring company had difficulty contacting the manufacturer. Finally, an independent "tech" (in his late 70"s) was sent out by the manufacturer to evaluate the floor.

Many months later I was told the manufacturer deemed it a "moisture issue". THERE WAS NEVER ANY WATER SITTING ON OR NEAR THE PROBLEM AREAS. The local flooring company ordered replacement boards. It took several more months to receive the boards which were damage and way too few of the correct size.

Also, a much darker "die lot" than the original boards! So now, 14 months after installation, we have had a pile of damaged/wrong color boards stacked in spare bedroom while we wait yet again for a solution.

Chesapeake Flooring engineered hardwood

AI Highlights
  • - Engineered hardwood installed in 2013; now peeling and chipping.
  • - Claim denied due to <5% damage; warranty not honored.

We had this engineered hardwood installed in 2013. At this point we have filed a claim for loss, peeling and chipping of the laminate.

The claim was denied because the damage was not over 5% of the entire floor. THIS PRODUCT IS MADE IN CHINA TRASH!!

The company was completely unapproachable and unwilling to even replace the damaged boards let alone the entire floor. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY!

The wood layer is so thin you will not be able to refinish ever. We spent around $30,000 on this floor and it is the regret I have about building this house.
