Same thing just happened to me. The number was (862)203-****.

First I spoke with a call lady who asked if my magazines were reaching me in good condition. I cancelled a magazine service about a year and a half to two years ago, which was an ordeal in itself. She told me that I had missed the window to cancel the automatic renewal and was re-enrolled. I told her that I wanted it cancelled and she told me that she would have to speak with a manager.

The manager got on the phone and told me roughly the same thing but I immediately asked to speak to his manager. He said "ok, but there's nothing she can do either." The second woman I spoke with tried to sweet talk me with "sweetie" and "honey", but I told her that she did not have my permission to charge my credit card. She said I did not have a choice to which I told her that there are precious things I have control over in my life, one of which is not signing up for a magazine service. I told her what she was going to do with my account, then she said "ok..." and hung up the phone.

It's a scam and I hope they have no legal standing to credit my account. However, since they called at 6:45 (after "business hours"), I could not call back.

Do not give these bloodsuckers any of your information. They are not legitimate.

Falsely billed for magazines

I have been duped by liberty periodical services. They called an ask for a subscription, but I didn't want a contract.

They got my personnel information illegally because I don't like to read magazines or have the time. Now a credit company is harrassing me for the money. I have called the different magazine companies to cancel the contracts but they have already been paid for the year and new magazines have started to come to my home lately also.

I am trapped by this awful company and my credit is ruined because of their crime. There should be laws against periodical companies for fraud.

Cancel my subscription

I had a call at my job. It was about magazine subscription to renew the service.

The boss of the magazine told me what to say while they were recording the call. I told her to cancel my subscription. After we were done talking she said she would. Then I got a letter from the company that I have renewed my subscription for 5 magazine the cost was $39.90 a month. The total cost was $1,197.00.

I work two full time jobs and don't have time to read anything. I think they should pay for their mistake

Central Periodical Services Is a Scam

I got a call from a company claiming they were calling to renew my magazine subscription. I do currently subscribe to a magazine.

I said no I didn't want to renew and was transferred to a "Manager", which was already bogus and unbelievable that only a Manager could handle this. Told him I didn't want to renew, then he asked to verify & tell him my debit card info, I refused, so they said that I would get charged for the magazine renewal. These guys had my last for digits of my card, my name, my address and who knows that else. It's a SCAM to get more of your info & charge you, BEWARE!!

They're not affiliated with any magazine. I have read other reports about their similar scams. They use your information to charge your card $5, small amounts so it stays under the radar. So don't be duped by this company!

I quickly called my bank and cancelled my debit card and stopped any transactions, which they were trying to process.

They tried to charge my card $5, I quickly disputed that with my bank. CENTRAL PERIODICAL SERVICES IS A SCAM!!

Then why did you give them your debit card? ***...

By Bill G. Chambers

The version of their company name I got is "JMS Marketing Associates"; without ever having been contacted by these people my wife and i noticed an unauthoreized charge for $49.90 against out bank account, logged on Nov 23, 2015.

My bank has canceled the charge and has turned the information over to their fraud division. I have no idea how these people got my account data--we never got a call from them or any other contacts.

Guest

They got me I canceled my card, but they keep calling and they're sending mail to my house what is the next step? And will I need to pay them back!

Guest

It happened to me. Didn't realize it until my magazine thati order never arrived.

They said that in order to cancel they needed my information.

now the keep sending bills the are over a thousand. Harassing phone calls and

mails. How do i stop them. My number what supposed to on their no call list

Guest

I got a call from them today saying they are checking with Ohio customers because they've gotten reports that magazines are coming damaged. I said I haven't had any problems with that and then they asked if I was receiving all the magazines I was supposed to.

I said I only got one. And he said well we have you down for 5. And that I must've talked to someone on the phone or that someone came to my door and I told him how there's no way they could have my info because I bought a groupon for the one magazine I receive. He said the only thing he could tell me about my visa is that it starts with a 4 (which duh, all visa cards do) And asked if I was still at my address which I no longer am and then he asked for my new address so he could cancel the subscriptions and I felt the entire thing was fishy so I hung up.

So beware! I googled them as soon as I hung up and found this page and boy am I glad I didn't give out any info!

My husband was a victime of this scam....TWICE. Yes twice.

we cancelled his card the first time after they gave him the BS spiel... then they called back a month later, and quoted him the first 8 digits of his card, and told him to verify the last 4 to cancel his account. The phone kept breaking up, with a bad connection, and he kept telling them he did not want the magazines. But we were charged 79.00.

Then we cancelled that card, and I contactedd the BBB, Attorney General, and the FTC.gov. Then they sent us a letter telling us to pay $1,440.00 for the subscription. I was furious. Thats when I wrote them a CEASE AND DESIST LETTER, along with a copy of an email sent to me from the Ohio Attorney general, BBB and FTC.

Three days later we got a letter from Central Periodical telling us "pursuant to your request, we cancelled your subscription and your balance is $0". So I suggest to ALL OF YOU, contact your state's Attorney General. Go to the bbb.org, (better business bureau) and also contact the ftc.gov and inform them of t his SCAM! Also send the company at info@***.com a copy of your complaints filed.

They will leave you alone after that! I PROMISE!

I also got a call from Central periodical Services and in the end my accout was charged $5.00. I went to the bank and cancelled the card immediately and the $5.00 pre-authorisation was not honored.

I then call the 800 number and spoke to a customer service rep. I told her that I had cancelled my card and no charges would be honored and told her to cancell the account which she did. There are two 800 numbers you can call to do this. 1-80*-***-**** or 1-80*-***-****.

Oh and by the way she tryied to get me to keep the service and lower the price by $25.00.

I told her no and that this whole deal was a SCAM!! Hope this helps some other victums out there!

Guest

I received the same call but unfortunately they had my card number and read it to me with the expiration date. I hung up immediately and called to cancel the card.

This is crazy!! Now they will not stop calling

Guest

I have a inside connection with this company how can we stop them??? I have her on our side they charged me 59.90 and it keep on charging I need help and return I could help you with info provided to me .

Guest

I received a call from whom I thought was a bill collector. I could hardly understand the broken English as it was.

So I went along with what they were talking about as far as a bill, so I thought. I received a mail about a bill and magazines from central periodical service. I have no interest in any magazine. I am on a fixed income, I have to pay $49.90 for 30 months and a late fee of 15.00 if I'm late.

I can not pay this or I will be out in the streets with no place to live. I told them that I cannot pay that for one month and if we can lessened the payments as again, I thought they were a bill collector, not a magazine company.

They are a rip off and they know how to trick you and using people you cannot understand. How am I going to pay this and my rent?

Scam involving magazine service

I have belonged to numerous magazine services, my first mistake!! Now I'm getting calls from Central Periodical Service and other companies stating that they send out my magazines.

They verify all my info, yes they have all my info!!! Though I've never belonged to their svc. They wanted me to confirm that I don't want to renew my service, but while asking questions about what company they represent they hung up on me. The number they called from is not an incoming call line and there is no listing for them in any directory!!!

Surprise. What do Ido?

I assume they will start taking money out of my acct. since I didn't confirm the no renewal.

Not sure how anyone could take money out of your account if you did not give them the info, and you never allow anyone to take money out of your bank account, do you???? They are trying to sell you magazine subscriptions.

It is a scam.

Best bet is to just hang up on them or anyone trying to sell you anything on the phone.

I hate magazines, I would never sign up for this

The file I made through the FTC

I want to stop this company.

This company has hundreds of complaints filed against them for the same exact situation I have encountered with them. They also have a D- rating with the better business bureaux as well as an affiliated company, liberty periodical services, having a F. I have canceled a subscription I have never agreed to wanting. The people calling are rude and threatening saying if I dont give them my new account information my bank will provide it anyway or my credit will be tarnished. They also refused to cancel the account and stated I was locked into a 60.00 a month subscription for the next 5 years. I would never agree to anything like this because I hate magazines and wasted paper. The representative refused to give me the bank account she supposedly had on file or the recording of my voice agreeing to their contract. Furthermore, the information she could provide me was false and did not add up. When I said I want no part and cancel it she said I had no choice. When I called back to make sure they did not have my bank information, a different representative said there was no account under my name. However the magazines sent to me are in my name. They need to be stopped immediately because people are losing hundreds of dollars under the radar. I have recently closed my bank account because of a stolen phone situation, however I am still afraid they will call back to harass me again.

Tried to auto-renew "free" magazine subscription

Updated by user Jul 24, 2012

There was a pending charge on my credit card from them, I called the phone number on the credit card (was a little different than the other numbers I had) and spoke with a lady who said that the charge was for SEVERAL other magazines that I don\'t remember ordering (if I did, it was to get 3 free issues and then cancel), but I never received any of them anyway. (It had to have been through somebody who had my credit card number, never gave that out either.) ANYWAY - they are supposed to not \"auto renew\" them and take the charge off of my credit card.

(The questions they were asking me were weird, they did ask if I had any other magazine subscriptions through them or through anybody else!) So, we\'ll see what happens. But no matter who it is, I will never take \"free\" subscriptions again!

Original review Jul 24, 2012

I received a call from Central Periodical Service telling me that my subscription to Shape magazine would auto-renew the next day and my credit card would be charged 49.90. (The only thing I could remember was getting a 3-month free trial to Shape, I think from when I clicked on a "free" Walmart gift card on facebook - which I immediately tried to back out of and I did cancel.) Anyway, I just started receiving the magazine less than 2 weeks ago.

(Whenever I get a "free" subscription, I write on the calendar when to cancel, if it does indeed require cancellation.) (Which is why I don't remember anything.) I spoke with 3 different people, since they all spoke so fast that I couldn't understand them. They said that in order to cancel the auto renewal to shape, they had to "override" my initial conversation (which I do not think ever happened) in their "K filing system", and that it was time-sensitive, so they had to speak fast. I was asking a lot of questions, one of the guys kept saying (condesendingly) "what don't you understand" etc. They wanted to read me a lot of questions, and I was to answer yes to all except the question about renewing my subscription - but the questions were so long, it was hard to understand, and they talked SO fast - and I couldn't stop them or they would have to start all over.

Anyway, I finally got a supervisor who explained slower, and even though I thought it was ridiculous, I wanted this to stop and did NOT want them to charge my card - so he made it "easier" and when he got to the question about renewing the subscription, he told me ahead of time that he would say "this is the last question" and that is when I should say no. (And it was worded correctly, no was the proper answer.) But the whole thing really sounded like a rip-off/scam, and I told them why couldn't I just tell them to not renew it (and had I not received the magazine, I would have ended it there). Right now, I am continuously monitoring my credit card(s), and sure enough, there is a "pending" charge for $5.00. (The cc company just puts in $1 or $5 for pending charges sometimes.) Also, I tried to look up this company (out of Grand Rapids, MI) and found nothing.

Bottom line - when you see "free Subway sub" or "free Walmart gift card" on the side advertising on Facebook, do NOT click on it!

(That's what started all this, and was a whole other nightmare which I won't go in to now.) And if anybody has dealt with this, please let me know! (Oh, and their - Central Periodical - number is 1-86*-203-****).

(To BillOfLV); Wow! You described it to a "t" - The only difference in mine wasn't to receive any magazines, was ALL to be cancelled (or not auto-renewed), and I am to get something in the mail (I guess that is when I will get hit with it!) (Also, when they were "reading" me the "new" agreement, they said it would override what I had previously agreed to - I wish I'd asked them to play back what I had "previously" said!) Anyway, when I called the phone number on my credit card, she said she would cancel it (but that was when she told me that I had 4 or 5 magazines that I had subscribed to), but she didn't give me a cancellation number. (Also, the girl didn't have a lot of background noise and didn't talk fast).

I just went through the same scam. CPS called about a magazine I had "ordered".

I could not recall having "ordered" the magazine. The phone connection "seemed" bad and I could not easily understand the caller, who then switched me to a "supervisor". Both spoke so fast I could not understand about half of what they said. I thought I had to agreed to buying one year prescription to a magazine without a renewal for $59 and change.

Then the "recorded" the transaction and read the "agreement" at an even faster pace. Then I received a document in the mail indicating that I had purchased seven magazines for 30 months at &59.90 a month for a total of $1,797.00. The original magazine was not even listed. I called CPS.

There response was that I had made that order and that was that. They offered to change it to 5 magazines, then after a time said they could cut it down to 4 magazines. My response was that there unethical sales tactics and I would not pay anything and would have my lawyer contact them.

After a slight pause he agreed to cancel the "agreement" and refund the $59.90, that should be in 4-5 days. I have a reference number and will follow up to make sure their "payment" is backed out of my credit card.

Nancy S Eqs

Yes, that's exactly how it went - except that I HAD received the magazine, which made me think (at first) that it could be semi-legit. (Just bad business methods?) What scares me is, I don't know how they got my credit card number.

At least my credit card will do something, and I probably will have to get new cards, which is a pain, since I don't know how they got my number and who else now has it! (And I'm going to warn people on facebook, too.)

Hi,

I am one of many who fell for this scam. I have cancelled my card but I am still getting magazines??

Did they keep sending you magazines or did they stop after you canceled the card? Does anyone know how to make this stop??

Guest

Central Periodical Services is a SCAM!

Guest

I just got called from them asking if I wanted to renew a magazine that I have never received. When I said I didn't want to renew any magazine I was then put on hold to speak to a "Manager", which was bogus.

I was asked a series of questions and asked to verify my personal information and the guy insisted I give him info that I didn't feel comfortable telling him. Soon after I played his game and said yes and no to questions which he asked way too quickly and way too low for me to make everything out.

After the call was done I called my bank to cancel my debit card, only to find they had already charged my card $5.00....those scammers work fast. Don't believe anything this company says, just hang up on them, which is what I should have done, but I thought for a moment they really were from a company who I do subscribe a magazine from.

Jonathan Walker from Central Periodical Services SCAM!!

If a Jonathan Walker level 5 supervisor calls after you speak with an Asley from Prediodical Services CTS from Grand Rapids Michigan it is a SCAM!!! The number he stated is 1-88*-299-**** extension 2828.

Don't fall for it. They give you bogus account # that does not exist. Just hang up!!!

Do not validate any credit card info in their system and check your credit card online to make sure they don'c charge you $5 with more in the future. You might need to cancel the card entirely so they don't take any money out.

I have received various calls from different numbers and did in fact come across this Johnathan Walker. I sent every magazines back but how can I get them to stop calling me.

I cancelled my credit card account so I wouldn't be charged which is why they call to get my new bank account. Is there any way of getting out of this scam?

Attempted Scammers

I was called by this company today, wanting to know if my magazines were coming to me in good shape. I told them I didn't have any magazines.

They gave me a list of ones that I got and cancelled years ago. Then asked to confirm some info. I wouldn't confirm, so they passed me to a 'manager', who said they couldn't cancel anything only confirm a renewal or stop the automatic renewal. I asked for this 'manager's' superior and was told there was not one.

So I asked this person if they were the owner/president/CEO; she said yes! This is a SCAM.

Watch your bank account! Be smart and question anyone down who attempts to get your info without being forthcoming with who they are.
