Verified ReviewerResolved: Customer service is terrible
They performed a "courtesy" repair to fix their original assembly problem.
It would not work properly.
Multiple emails to their technical support contact were answered with "It's hard to use, the instructions are very technical, so just keep trying and you'll get it."
They stopped troubleshooting without getting it to work, and went back to "Yes it is frustrating but keep trying and I promise you will get it working."
4 months later, I found a loose nut on the vertical axis. Loose = Not even finger tight.
I made it finger tight, and it started working for about 2 days. Then the nut had loosened again.
I asked them how tight should I make the nut, and can I replace it with a locking nut with a little nylon ring to keep it from coming loose. They said they would have to have someone get back with me. They never did.
for 6 years it hasn't worked right unless the nut is snugged up.
Even then it is very delicate to use.
Last month, several people in an astronomy group wanted to look at the nut, and immediately pointed out that the bearing the nut tightens against had been installed at a severe angle, which would cause every issue we've been reporting about it since we got it.
I contacted celestron with this info.
They told me I needed a new drive motor and control board for $200.
Then they said "No, wait. you don't need that at all.
Someone will get back with you." They have not done that.
I opened a tech support ticked and asked for, at the very least, the torque spec, and whether or not I could use a locking nut. I also pointed out that this would explain everything I was telling them 6 years ago with my previous tech support person.
They responded by telling me that they can't find the original tech support case, so I have to send it to them to look at and tell me how much it will cost me to have them fix it.
I sent them the original case nuumber and date, complete with a screenshot.
The ignored it and instead marked the tech support case as 'closed.'
And by repeatedly opening the case to tighten this nut over the years, I've managed to loosen a wire or connector or something, now the controller won't talk to it.
Preferred solution: At the least: The answer to my repeated question: What is the torque spec for the nut, and can I or can I not use a locking nut instead. I would also like to know the price of a new bearing.
User's recommendation: If you have even the slightest issue with a new product from them, do NOT use their tech support. Return the item instead of letting them convince you to "keep practicing."

Update: After posting my experience on here, they agreed to do a "one time courtesy repair" to correct their assembly problem. I received it back a few days ago; it has been raining and cloudy so I have not had a chance to try it, but it has been tightened down so tight that I am actualy surprised the little drive motor is actually able to move it at all.
It is clearly struggling.
Whatever. They made it tighter, so I guess it's better now.
