Financial Assistance Policy & More

1) Recently had x-rays completed that cost $1500 out-of-pocket. First, I don't understand why reading one xray is $100, but reading another x-ray is $300. Second, I call and ask about financial assistance. I share how much I earn and my family size and am told I qualify. Next thing I know I get paperwork asking not only for copies of my most recent paychecks (which I completely understand and agree with as I understand the need to have evidence of what people are claiming), but also all bank accounts, current stock holdings and on and on and on. Frankly, it what became clear to me is that Carilion has created a policy what a very clear intent...DO NOT ACTUALLY PAY OUT ANY FINANCIAL AID!

2) I schedule a preventative colonoscopy. They cannot tell me the time of the appointment, only that it will be morning or afternoon and we'll tell you the day before. Then, understandably, I am told that I must have a ride to and from the appointment. Again, totally get it. Then, I am told I must have someone sitting there during the procedure. Why? Is the doctor going to come out and update them as to when the camera has entered my bowel and then again when it has been removed? And, so I called around. There is a highly reputable medical facility about 3 miles away without this requirement who can actually give me an exact time of my appointment weeks in advance. It's amazing!

3) Follow-up to x-rays...go to see an orthopedic doctor. He recommends physical therapy. I try to schedule this with Carilion. There are no options early than 8 and nothing later than 4 and nothing on weekends? Are you joking? Does Carilion not think people have jobs? I cannot take off in the middle of day for 2 hours (travel time included) for 4-6 weeks straight. And, guess what, neither can most other people.

4) I go to check-in ahead of time for my annual check-up. Guess what, with all the above, with all the charges you have billed me and my insurance carrier, your system states I don't have any insurance provided. Are you freaking kidding me? You charged my carrier over $2k just 2 months ago!!! What is going on there?

Look, the harsh truth is this. I like your doctors. It's the administrative stuff that is just going to *** in a handbasket. And yes, this is based on my experiences, plus what multiple nurses and doctors there I know personally tell me. The sad truth is that the best thing Carilion has going for it is that it feels like Lewis Gale is even worse.

What is the $1500 out of pocket? Is that part of a deductible on insurance YOU chose?

And if you are going to ask for financial assistance, you play by their rules.

They have every right to know every financial asset you have. Do better.

Far from it. Just asking a question. You need to stop with the “haha” and lose the chip on your shoulder when asking for assistance.

Like you posted any assistance. Being a pompous *** isn't helpful.

I went to the Er in Rocky mount VA the only hospital there owned by Carilion today 8/30/20020. I had heat exhaustion.

I never got any help from them I left to go to Bedford Hospital to get help because they wouldn't help me where I was. My mom meet me and took me to Bedford. They thought I was acting out and there was nothing wrong with me. I could hear the nurses saying that I was full of it and what not even after I got dizzy and almost fell they wouldn't help me.

I dialed 911 from the hospital and they told them nothing was wrong with me. I was having chest pains and my lips were black but this seemed to go unnoticed by staff. Thank God for prayer, Jesus, and a loving mom coming to my aid. If you have brown skin and are bipolar don't go to Carilion unless it's something minor or if you have to go pray for someone saved to care for you when you get there they should be ashamed of themselves but there not.

I just as well tell it all almost every time I go to Carilion any of them in my area I am drug tested and given a pregnancy test no matter what I go there for almost.

I have never failed a drug test and have never been pregnant but once 24 or 25 years ago, so basically I am a drug addict, liar, *** and I am bipolar. They don't listen to me most of the time they give me test I don't need and run up big bills I can't pay.

Just because I have Medicare and Medicaid doesn't mean just anything will be paid for. I am tired and frustrated.

  • Some locations are better than others like lewis gale

Cons:
  • Do not always treat the mentally ill well
  • You can often times hear them bad mouthing clients
  • Sometimes they do unneeded test if you have good insurance

Preferred solution: They need to have better training for employee's and need to also have concequences for folk that mistreat the paying public I say hit them where it hurt's fine them or dock that pay somehow.

User's recommendation: Be wise when and if you go to them and always take someone with you that can stay with you most of the time or the whole time, you will get better treatment with witnesses.
