Ridiculous administrative fees collected at time of application

AI Highlights
  • - $300 admin fee (plus tax) charged with the application.
  • - Denied despite strong rental history and income; medical issues hurt credit.

Recently applied for an apartment in Scottsdale AZ and was a bit surprised to see they required a $300 (plus tax no less) administrative fee when submitting an application. Now an admin fee is fine, but this is exorbitantly high and I’ve never been asked to pay it prior to being approved, but since I’ve never had a problem being approved for a place and was assured if it wasn’t approved I’d get it back I’d go ahead and do it, confident I’d be approved.

Mistake.

I was not approved despite a spotless rental history and making nearly 5 times the rent, credit isn’t stellar due to medical issues which I explained and could have paid a higher deposit, but nope. So I expected to have my admin fee refunded within days after they sent me the statement with the amount to be refunded. Days pass, nothing and email to leasing office regarding status went unanswered. Finally called corporate and was told a check was set to be issued the following day, nearly 14 business days after it was supposed to be refunded, and I was never told it would be a check, I assumed they would put it back in the card used.

Here we are, nearly a week later and still nothing, not coming today either according to informed delivery.

Left a message with corporate and waiting for a return call. Funny they sure were quick to take my money but don’t want to return it - and I was never a tenant!

It’s not like a deposit at move out where they have x amount of days to get it back to you, if someone’s application is denied then their money needs to be refunded ASAP, it’s not like it’s a few bucks, it’s hundreds of dollars. Unacceptable, I’ll never rent from a Camden property, so happy I found a better place, looks like I dodged a bullet.
