Extremely disappointed with Calvin Barry
- - Calvin Barry's firm ignored Charter rights and did not push to drop charges.
- - Missed court date and warrant; another firm dropped charges in 4 days.
I've taken my complaints to the Law Society of Ontario.
On top of that, there was video proof of a police officer lying to another police officer about my son, an inconclusive toxicology report, a drug evaluation report that appeared to be cut and pasted because another surname was used in place of my son's surname 4 times in the report, a police officer's statement contradicted medical doctor's observations; video of my son's speech was clearly not slow and slurred as per the police statement, validated health issues that confirmed exactly what my son told the police. Calvin's office never requested my son's proof of insurance to have that charge dropped and never presented an accurate and clear picture to the Crown. To top it off, Calvin's office missed a court date and there was a warrant out for my son's arrest, which was demoralizing, embarrassing, a defamation of his character, and caused undue stress and duress. My son never even received an apology for this from Calvin's office.
After 15 months and a large legal bill, Calvin's office suggests that they received a GREAT OFFER from the crown to drop his charges down to careless driving. We immediately retained a different lawyer, who within 4 DAYS of reviewing my son's case, approached the crown, and had ALL CHARGES DROPPED...ALL WITHIN 4 DAYS. The disparity between Calvin's firm working 15 months and getting a careless driving charge, or 4 days after being retained having all charges dropped is immense. I believe that a good job, well done deserves to be acknowledged and praised.
However, I also believe that when critical information that could have, and should have, been used in my son's defense is overlooked; court dates are missed and warrants for my son's arrest follow (contributing to additional stress and duress); and a case is dragged on and legal bills mount for 15 months, and then ANOTHER LAW FIRM HAS ALL CHARGES DROPPED WITHIN 4 DAYS...well, this needs to be addressed as well. It is my opinion that the evidence in my son's case was never thoroughly reviewed by Calvin's firm or presented properly to the crown...however, we were billed as if it was.

With his diligence and attention to detail he was able to have the charges dropped and the matter was settled in favor of the defense. I would recommend him very highly as the most skilled and knowledgeable lawyer in Ontario Canada. SO if your looking for a lawyer in the GTA on in Toronto or anywhere in Ontario he an excellent choice to make because he knows the legal system. Because of his experience as a Crown Attorney Calvin has the experience and also a skilled group of professionals on his team.
If you are in serious trouble you need a serious Lawyer and that is what Calvin is. He is a very experienced knowledgeable attorney with the ability to get the job done in a timely manner.

I was charged in a DUI, he told me that the police screwed up and this is an easy case. He took my 15K then ask me to plead guilty 2 weeks before the trial. He is a dead loser, but in this cases I am the loser. He should be disbarred and have his license revoked.
How can he sleep at nights is beyond comprehension.
I have spoken with some people with the same experience. I was at his office when someone was looking to beat hi up.

DON'T Use CALVIN BARRY For LEGAL SERVICES

I definitely would NOT recommend Calvin Barry as a choice for any legal services. He's out for your money and he'll say otherwise.
DON'T believe in him. At first, the consultations are with him. Later he just ends up handing it off to someone else within his firm, even though you pay for his representation. When the big day came, I had someone from his firm represent me with NO MATERIALS to support my case.
They knew my case had a little to NO chance right from the start. This was something they could of but didn't mention when they received my disclosure/evidence. They didn't put up a real proper fight for my case knowing and even emphasizing the IMPORTANCE of my case. He just talks fancy.
Unfortunately I didn't listen to what I was told about him and to NOT let him represent me. This whole process only costed me. Wasting a ton of money, time & effort. Ultimately, I would have been better off just walking in myself and pleaing guilty.
DON'T USE CALVIN BARRY. YOU'LL REGRET IT.
In My opinion don't waste your money as I did . I got sucked in by his slick video clip and his and his staff of smooth talkers .It's cheaper to just plead guilty to a DUI instead of hiring his firm .Its all talk and a money grabbing operation.

Getting back to my real complaint, he than asked me for an additional $2,000 dollars, so $4,500 total. I was so angry, I thought lawyers were people of their word and not try to fleece their customers.
At the end, I just left his office and lucky I got bail from this shameful lawyer. I also contacted The law Society Of Upper Canada and they told me, he doesn't have a good track record. So I warn any new clients to stay away from this lawyer and his office.
