  • - Food arrived late and some items were cold.
  • - Special occasion ruined.
Brewers Fayre - Sunderland BF

Hi, my family and I have been long supporters of Brewers Fayre till our local BF had closed. This evening, for a special occasion we visited our next nearest which was Wessington, Sunderland.

We are so very let down by the service and food.

I understand the restaurant was busy.

Tonight was absolute shambles. We are absolutely gutted that our special occasion was ruined.

The queue was constantly out the main door for one. Took forever to be served.

When we eventually did get served, we were informed that there is limited items available on the menu as they were out of stock so had to change our order.

Then after quite a wait, 45 out of 6 or our meals arrived with the front of house saying that the fish and chips order will be a further 10 minute wait. So the rest of us had to start eating ours without all of us having our food.

The fish and chips were eventually brought but he had to eat his meal alone as everyone else was finishing. He asked for vinegar but this was not brought so I went to the bar to ask for some. I asked a lady behind the bar where I could find some only to be shouted at to wait a minute. Think her name tag said Liz.

She ignored me and started serving drinks. I asked another bar member if she can point me in the right direction to find vinegar as there was none on the condiments unit. She said they only had 3 vinegars available in the whole restaurant so had to search around for it. Eventually, we had some but by this point as you can imagine, the fish and chips were no longer quite hot.

The other meals we had were not great either.

There was very little that seemed to be slapped on each plate. Definitely not what we're used to having at Brewers Fayre.

We ordered

x1 chicken tikka

x1 fish and chips

x2 smothered chicken

x1 cheese and bacon burger

x1 kickin chicken along with our drinks which we ordered around 6.10pm.

There was no check backs done on any of our meals which we were waiting for to tell them our problems as stopping a staff member and asking for help was not an option. I was not offered a receipt for any of my buys.

We ordered desert which we waited a long time for too. I tried to see a staff member to cancel our orders but they are all too busy and again, I was shouted at by the same lady.

Eventually, the deserts arrived.

x2 berry freddo

x1 caramel nibbles ice cream

x1 choc brownie and ice cream.

Please see attached photo.

The lady who gave us them did apologise for the wait and made a joke about the ice cream but would you say that this picture is the standard that is ok to serve and have someone pay for?

The caramel nibbles ice cream was just liquid.

We're completely gutted that our whole dining experience has been spoilt for our special occasion.

We thought the longer journey to our next nearest Brewers Fayre would be worth it. It really, really wasn't.

Tried to contact the restaurant with no replies.

Contact the restaurant for what? If you didn’t leave before the food came with your list of grievances up to that point or speak to a manager during or after, you lost any valid opportunity. You don’t eat, pay, go home THEN complain.

As mentioned, it wasn't an option to speak to the manager at the time. We did try. Got to the point where we had to leave.

Over charged

AI Highlights
  • - Stayed at Premier Inn, Lancaster; meal deal unavailable due to wait.
  • - Brewers Fair closed 9:55 pm; £9.10 for 3 halves of coke; refund not received.

On Thursday 5/6/25 we stayed at prem inn in Lancaster. We were offered the meal deal, but when we popped into Btewersfair was told we couldnt have food for up to 60 mins.

So had to decline the meal deal, after the concert we had been to. We popped back to Brewers fair it was 9.55, but it was closed and fully locked up. We checked out at 11am and called back to Brewersfair, only to be told no food until 12 noon. We ordered 3 cokes, was offered refill or pint or half pint.

It came to £9.10 for 3 halfs of coke. When I asked if that was the correct price I was told that she had charged up for refills which I never add for. I spoke to the lady in charge and she said we dont have an option on the till for standard drinks. Do they charge every one for refills.

I explained that I was offered regular half pints. Not happy to be over charged we had a conversation and she finally said she would give me a £1 refund. Which I never received back onto my card.

I had eaten and drank at brewersfair for years. But this experience has put a stop to that.

User's recommendation: Always check your bill.

Their food is horrible. Everything is factory made, shipped frozen and microwaved or dropped into deep fryers.

Nothing is made from scratch.

I know, because a friend worked there. Did you speak to a manager?

I went to one of your pubs today in Hengrove, Bristol. I was very upset with the meal that my daughter and I received for Mother's Day.

The beef was tough, the vegetables were cold, and the gravy was so thin it was like water. None of it had any taste.

My daughter, who is a student and not has a lot of money, was very upset and felt she had disappointed me. I will never go to this restaurant again and definitely will not recommend it.

Disgusting customer service.

  • - Rude staff tried to move us on.
  • - No table without a booking and snacks unavailable.
  • - Drinks were reluctantly allowed after a long wait.

Today at about 11.45am I called in to Brewers Fayre in Bideford with a friend. We asked if we could have a table as we wanted a drink and light meal.

The whole restaurant was empty but we were rudely informed if we had no booking we couldn't have a table. I suggested a drink and snack would be fine and we were told no snacks were available. I then requested just drinks which were reluctantly agreed to. The waitresses were both extremely rude and seemed determined to try to get rid of us.

By the time we left about three quarters of an hour later there were still only a few guests present. My friend and I have previously enjoyed regular meals at this establishment but were appalled by the lack of respect and courtesy today.

We feel the staff currently working here need retraining in appropriate customer service skills. If they genuinely dislike their work so much perhaps it's time they left.

User's recommendation: Don't bother!

Complaint about Christmas meal

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Arrived for Christmas dinner; seated near a play area.
  • - Carvery queue; tough meat and hard carrots; hair in lager; 210 spent; free meal next time.

Arrived for Christmas dinner in 2024. I was seated near the play area, where kids were running around, screaming, and crying.

The starter was fine. However, I had to queue up for the carvery. I could not get a fork into the carrots or Brussel sprouts. The tiny balls of stuffing were as hard as rocks and inedible.

My daughter tried to stab one in front of the manager and it shot off the plate. The meat was tough. We were sent a round of drinks in response to our complaint, but there was a hair in the lager. We had to send it back and received another apology.

For all this, the only compensation was a free meal next time. This is not good enough. We spent 210 units for this dinner and did not expect to queue for our food either!

The whole experience was terrible. I would like to know where I can lodge a complaint about this, as we are not happy.

They describe themselves as a family-friendly chain pub. It sounds like you should have went elsewhere.

You set yourself up to be disappointed by being cheap. Their description screams “kids welcome” and “packaged food” that gets heated up or made by people with only on-the-job training.

Chefs? Not here.

Guest

I forgot to add: what are you talking about when you mention paying in units? I know Brewer's has a bonus club but that goes by points.

If you want to officially complain, why don't you actually go to the Brewer's Fayre website?? On the homepage, scroll down and click Contact Us.

Guest

When I lived in the UK, I always had to queue for a carvery. Brewer's Fayre is a budget restaurant chain that microwaves and fries in grease pretty much all their food.

Their "chefs" are not chefs but rather low-wage cooks who don't even have to have prior experience. You should have asked for a partial refund if you weren't able to eat the main course. There's a Tobeys Carvery in Southsea, Portsmouth, you should have gone there. As far as the children being loud near the play area, what did you expect?

If there is a play area, there are going to be children and children are loud and noisy. British people are worse than Americans when it comes to making their children behave in public.

Food was cold service didnt exist as im dissabled i was offered no help tables were dirty on top and underneath nothing was labelled it was a joke soft drink issued soda water not fanta

Original review Jun 17, 2024
Customer service was poor. I went to the bar to order drinks.

As I am disabled with a walking stick, I had no offers to help with drinks. I had a long walk to get a Fanta, but when I got it, it turned out to be just soda water. I asked for help, and she said she would change the barrel. I stood there waiting, but she never came back to tell me it was okay.

The only way I knew was when I saw her back behind the counter. We chose prawn cocktail for starters, which was a joke because there were no spoons. My wife went to the bar, and they told her to use a knife and fork. When it came to the carvery, the Yorkshire puddings were cold and tough like cardboard.

When I went to get carrots, I picked up the spoon and it burnt my hand. The guy just said he would get another spoon and didn't ask if I was okay. I then sat down and found that the peas and carrots were cold, and the table we sat at wasn't clean. Hygiene is poor and the first impressions were very poor.

The overall customer service was lacking. Date of experience: 16 June 2024.

User's recommendation: Customer service and quality and cleanliness

Hello, I have just visited your restaurant and was served by Callum N that was the name on the receipt , so we went to the bar to order some food the man kept rolling his eyes because it is New Years Day so no offers were available so we had to re think what we wanted , my auntie decided to take deserts off our order and she had her loyalty points for two free deserts and the man said oh whatever then , the food came out and the chips were burnt and cold like a 1 star all inclusive the fish was soggy my husband ended up taking it home and feeding it to the cat because the food wasnt nice or edible for humans , we spoke to the manager about this and with the attitude of the staff it was disgraceful and unprofessional. It completely ruined the atmosphere and if the young man took his attitude into 2024 if some people wouldnt have already ordered I wouldnt have eaten there at all personally I work in hospitality and I would never treat a customer that apporlingly the manager was shouting abuse over the counter to my nana when she was stood by the door and gave her 25% back but to be honest after all of us spending £100 with getting a 25% discount on my email it was utter shock we are regular customers I came the night before the wedding and I gave the manager a £10 tip because they made the experience but after today wouldnt give them anymore of my money. We only asked questions about the menu and he was continuously rolling his eyes whenever we asked him a questions then we heard staff complaining about us asking questions.i made a comment to my auntie whats his problem.
