My bank account was frozen due to a fraudulent transaction and when the hospital tried to bill they couldnt get paid. I had to get account reinstated in order for them to be able to charge for my visit. Its reinstated and Im at the hospital they can now bill for my stay.

Verified ReviewerDeceitful about coverage
Blue Cross Blue Shield admitted they were at fault and agreed to pay 50% but the check has still not arrived. I am, therefore, technically still awaiting a resolution.
The vision benefits were a joke - very limited coverage and providers. They no longer honor any of the major chains like LensCrafters or 1-800 Contacts, only little dinky local people who did not have my frames and my lenses weren't covered. Now onto the dental fiasco. I read to booklet and it was very vague.
HMMM. I called and took notes. Dentures were covered for 50% both in network and out of network. They said the same to my dentist when they called about coverage.
Well it turns out that that is for permanent dentures only. If you have to have a temporary, the cost of almost $1000, is totally on you. This should be clear especially when a customer calls with specific questions. Fortunately, I was able to drop them because open enrollment still was open.
They lost thousands because they refused $330. What a deceitful company and I had had them for 25 years previously.

Provider customer service
I am an out of state provider (Georgia), trying to confirm benefits for a BCBS of SC member. The automated line just repeats back the information that I obtain online and it is almost impossible to speak to a customer service rep for information that cannot be obtained online. I've had to have the patient call customer service directly and be added to call to get their benefits for specific outpatient surgery.
User's recommendation: Avoid BCBS of SC if your employer offers anything else.
From a medical equipment provider
I work for a company that provides durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, CPAP, breast pumps). Let me say something about this specific BCBS branch...
they are awful! It's almost impossible to make contact with anyone there for verify specialized benefits information like for breast pumps. I have been on the phone with patients waiting for me to talk to these people and sometimes we wait for 40 minutes - unacceptable. If you're lucky enough to get ahold of a representative, you may or may not get the right answer about benefits.
We've had several patients with this insurance have their multi-thousand dollar PAP machines denied after we received authorization to give them the machines because these people are a mess. Do not use BCBS South Carolina!
They are terrible for providers AND patients. Go through BCBS Kansas, Michigan, anywhere but South Carolina.
- You get through faster with snapchat apparently
- Angry patients
- Get wrong benefit information
- Low quality coverage
Preferred solution: There is no helping them. Maybe dissolve this branch.
Horrible company, pays for nothing, awful Junk policy coverage.
I would not have taken my current job had I realized how terrible the insurance coverage is. I pay over 15K a year for a family plan that seems to cover nothing.
Prescriptions are now included in deductible so medications that cost $25 under my previous coverage are $750 a month under BCBS of SC. I can either take my meds or feed my family. Avoid this god awful company like the plague if you can, they cover nothing, require "pre-authorization" for everything, provide junk coverage and just take your money.
This company is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with health insurance in the USA. Rip off artists selling junk coverage and providing no benefits, all for the wonderfully low price of over twenty thousand dollars a year once the "deductible" is factored in.
Stuck in the 90s
Billing will be knocking on your credit report before SC BCBS acknowledges your claim. Everything is over the phone or by mail, with long wait times and weeks of mail sitting at BCBS waiting for a claim to be filed.
They don't seem to know that it's 2019.
Don't pay for any services...
They are the worst, they don't pay for anything including in-network doctor visits. I went to an in-network Orthopedic and Hematologist, combined I had to pay out $425.00.
Everything is the patients responsibility. My daughter went to the ER while in college because someone slipped something in her drink and she was violently ill - not covered and not an emergency. Its been 2 years of *** with this insurance company and ending soon. The worst thing they ever did was raise my premiums 20% because they said my 19 yr old daughter (pre-med in college) smokes!
She appealed it and I doubt I'll ever get my money back...
stay away from BCBS of SC... better yet just run!
Preferred solution: Price reduction
Just awful .
Twice they approved Drs. But then refused to pay their part for procedures or services.
I went to approved pain management Dr.(in order to see Dr. you must submit to urine drug test it's a law in Florida) they refused to pay for lab test that you have to take BEFORE you see the Dr.$1300.00 !!!out of pocket! Second time was Colonoscopy, again approved Dr. this time wouldn't pay because not the right kind of location to have it done.
Must be outpatient hospital even though this is the only place the Dr. does this procedure. Again paid for something we shouldn't have. Now I have reached my deductibles and I am having a hard time getting them to pay for physical therapy services after knee replacement.
They say they needed to be pre-approved but pre-approval was not necessary in April when I had orthoscopic surgery on the same knee.
So between April and August the rules changed! When -ever I call to talk with someone I am reminded I could go on line to get answers to my questions, isn't it obvious that I want to talk to a real person(with a fake name) if I've gone to the trouble of calling and being on hold forever?!
Bluecross Blueshield Of South Carolina - Customer Care Review
I have now been on hold for 44 minutes with them in Chicago. I talked to my Chiropractor who calls them daily and he said normal hold times are 45 minutes which they make weekly.
This is a long term problem that they are not trying to fix. They are doing this to avoid the small cost of a call center rep. Pathetic for an organization of this size. Why does Blue Cross think it is acceptable to do this to their partners and customers?
Time to find a healthcare provider that picks up the phone when you have a serious health concern to address. Thanks, Sean
Long hold times
I recently called into bcbs of sc for help with my account and the time i waited to speak with a representative was ridiculous....they will lose a lot of their customers because of this, a lot of people will get tired of holding on and hang up, i know i did....i understand that there are a great deal of people that utilize their services but to be on hold for ridiculous amounts of times is ridiculous. I went grocery shopping and came back home and was still on hold.
This is absolutely unacceptable.
I'm quite sure other people have been through the same scenario as me. Something should be done about this.
Failure to cover emergency room visit
Blue Cross has been denying my wife's claim for coverage as their "nurse" claims it was not an emergency even thought the hospital coded it emergency as she went in with shooting chest pains, numbness in her arms and dizzyness. Blues Cross has been unwilling to communicate as well as with the hosiptal at MUSC.
It has taken us over a year to have anyone speak to us until they were threatened with a lawsuit. The nurse is still denying our claim as her opinion is that it was a non-emergency visit.
I am filing a lawsuit against them! I highly reccommend going with another provider as they are horrible to work with.
Preferred solution: Full refund
Blue Fraud Blue Scam
Blue Cross Blue Shield seems to feel that a kidney stone is a work related injury necessitating worker's compensation coverage. They didn't want to cover what little bit the a required to on the State Plan (South Carolina) so they deemed a kidney stone a work related illness or injury.
This was very interesting as I know of now way whatsoever that a kidney stone could originate from any type of work related task or accident.
This was a clear episode of trying to avoid covering a legitimate claim. I really shouldn't be suprised but that was quite impressive!!

Blue Cross Bull *** makes you wonder what is the point anymore of having health insurance. They literally cover nothing but have no problem collecting your premiums every month.
Typical insurance company, a bunch of frauds who sell you on the importance of having insurance (only reason I have it is because it is mandated by my employer). I worked for an insurance company and quit because I couldn't live with myself as they wanted me to screw people over so they could save a couple pennies. Really just white collar criminals at the end of the day. I don't know how much longer people are going to continue to pay for this trash until they realize its a waste of money.
Even if you did have a life threatening accident or illness, BCBS would find a way to deny your claim so you die leaving your family in debt. Rape without a kiss if you ask me.
