Verified ReviewerTerrible service, thieves, liars, run away from this company
On November 20th, I returned an item via mail with the following return for an order of a total of $288 after tax. The item was unopened, in its original packaging, and in the same condition as when it was received since I never laid my hands on the item at all.
I have photographic evidence to support this claim, with dated pictures clearly showing the unopened package ready to be shipped back to you. I also have 2 witnesses, able to testify and prove that I have never physically touched the item to be able to damage it. The item remained for exactly 5 days at my house since I planned on returning it in person due to having reservations about the reliability of mail refunds, but I ended up returned it via mail as the nearest store was too far for me to go to considering my busy schedule. Mind you their return policy says 30 days so me keeping it for 5 days because I was too busy to go return it should not matter at all.
Despite this, I have been accused of "damaging" the item, which is clearly impossible since I returned it to them unopened, did they send it to me damaged?
I spoke with three different representatives to date, one of them named Youssef, who all kept trying to gaslight me, telling me that their quality was perfect so that they wouldn't take the blame for a damaged item, telling me that I damaged it because the UNOPENED PACKAGE stayed at my house for 5 days before reaching them. They kept telling me that they would call me back, connect me to managers, escalate my complaint, but those were all blatant lies because I had to call them all the time to hear back and I have a few emails with no response even though it's been 3 weeks. Whenever I call they try to get me off the phone as fast as possible, they leave me on hold for long times, and they clearly are aware of the issue as they know me by name now. This lack of communication only further reinforces my belief that the accusations against me are baseless and unjust.
They're all incredibly unprofessional, seem to have no customer service training.
I have been met with dismissive, dishonest, and unprofessional behavior from multiple representatives within this company. I have explained my situation clearly and explained how there is no possibility that I could have harmed the item's condition unless it had been sent to me like that, which I would not be aware of as I did not open it, yet I continue to be gaslit to think that I could have damaged an item I never even opened.
The mistreatment and abuse of consumers is ridiculous for a company of a "luxury" status. Why would you, as a company, lie and go through all of this hassle to avoid giving a refund of not even $300? I am DONE with them, this is unacceptable.
I have NEVER had such horrible service. I hate dishonest companies, I hate thieves and this experience has clearly shown me that they are just that, dishonest thieves.

Verified ReviewerVery disappointed with quality
I recently purchased the Birks Essential Yellow Gold Moon Pendant Necklace online. I received it yesterday and am very disappointed in the quality.
The chain is very thin and the clasp is so tiny that it is hard to attach to the tiny, thin grommets on the chain. I paid $624.75 which is a large amount of money for a little moon pendant and thin chain.
Not worth it! I am very hesitant buying anything else from Maison Birks!

Online purchase
I had recently made an online purchase of Birk's Splash 18W diamond and pink sapphire ring. It had initially been priced at over $4,000 dollars but was on sale for just under $3,000.
I have made many purchase over the years from Birk's but these have been in-store. I felt comfortable and confident in ordering the ring online because I believed in the impeccable reputation of Birk's quality and service.
The ring arrived via Canada Post in the traditional blue box. I was shocked at the ring because the online description and visual was certainly not representative of the ring that I received. It looked like a cheap knock off and certainly not the gorgeous ring portrayed online.
The other disappointing feature was that it did not include a certificate detailing the purchase price or diamond and sapphire carat.
I have sent an email to Birk's over one month ago with no response, had spoken to the store manager from where the ring was shipped from in Montreal with promise of a follow up, none occurred and spoke to the media representative for Birk's by phone regarding my concern and no follow up. Very disappointing for a company that represents itself as providing outstanding quality and and customer service.

Birks Rock & Pearl | 36" Silver and Pearl Necklace
I purchased a necklace from Birks online store. Easy to complete, and my purchase arrived promptly.
Unfortunately this 36 inch necklace had not been attached in the box, and was bunched up in one corner of the box like a ball of entangled string.
There were holes where some type of wiring should have been present to hold the necklace in place. There were not there. Someone had just dumped the necklace in a box.
This is a gift. Can you imagine the negative impact if I hadn't opened the box to verify the merchandise?
This is not Birk's best day.
Birks Jewellers - Customer Care Review from Laval, Quebec
I had a horrible experience.
It was 4pm on Friday my daughter and I walked in and the staff were mostly scattered.
There were 2 speaking to each other an Asian girl and a gentleman. I asked her where I could find the Bee collection that was in the store window. She never spoke to me she started walking and I assumed we just had to follow her which we did. She pointed to a counter and
Walked away and just left us there. She went back to her conversation with the guy. We stood there a few minutes nobody bothered with us a most certainly not her.
I was extremely disappointed in the lack of service it certainly was not a lack of personnel that was the issue. I was really upset on my way out I spoke to another lady at the cash who was equally unfriendly told me I could speak to Lyng *** if I wanted to and I was in a rush at that point that I said I would send an email. Wow what a disappointment maybe you can take some customer service courses from Tiffany !!!!

Tag battery replaced with japanese battery
2 years ago i took my Tag Heuer Indy 500 watch in to Birks in the Bayshore Shopping Center in Kanata ON to have the battery replaced. I was advised it had to go to a Tag authorized service to ensure water resistance guarantee.
It took almost a month and cost $300. Yesterday I had to take 2 Tag watches in for batteries including the Indy 500 which was due. This time I took it to a reputable downtown Ottawa jeweler who changed the batteries both Tags. He stated he could not warranty for water resistance but would inspect the seal and offer an opinion.
Total time 20 minutes total cost for the 2 watches $30. To my horror he informed me that the Indy 500 watch had a Japanese battery and as such there was no way that it had been serviced by a Tag technician. In fact in his opinion had a Tag tech been asked to look after the battery replacement this time it would have been even more expensive as the watch did not have the right parts.
I feel like the Bayshore Ottawa Birks store misrepresented the service and likely grossly over charged me. I am not happy.

Terrible Customer Sevice
OK, was just in Birks today. I haven't stepped foot in a Birks in years. But I always respected the Canadian element of Birks. I remember it as a kid, my mom shopping in there, etc. Fond memories. Until today however. And I will never go back. I walked in there to inquire about a bracelet I needed fixing. This is what I was met with: a very tall male sales clerk whom, as I walked in the door and who I was just about to say hi to, smugly looked at me, then proceeded to walked away. There was no one else in the store, just him and 2 other sales clerks who also looked up at me, then looked away. But the tall one in particular blew me away. He actually looked at me with attitude written all over his face, and walked away in this slow nonchalant manner. No hello, no can I help you. Nothing. Unbelievable. This is the flagship store. And they have him working there? The 2 women downstairs in the jewelry repair were not much better. One was OK, but in a forced friendliness sort of way that didn't feel sincere at all .... But the other one, same smug look. No hello from either of them. I stood there while they discussed something, neither of them even acknowledging my existence. Well done Birks. Way to go. What a way to treat your customers!
- Poor customer service
Preferred solution: Just attend to the poor customer service!
Stay away from birks
Tried to order Xmas present by phone, told to go online and order, which I did and confirmed they had it in stock I then phoned to confirm I would get it for Xmas which they promised I would They charged my card and then said they didn't have the product. Still trying to get my money back !!!
And the "silly lady " in customer service says she understand my frustration LOL . She also tried to tell me she never charged my card even when I sent her a copy of the statement
I think their stores are Ok but stay away from their internet site

Outrageous charge for watch battery
After initially going to the First Canadian Place store I went to their Bay Bloor store to have the battery in my Tag Heuer watch changed. The first store told me that if I left my watch there that it would take a month but I could take it to the Manulife Center store where they would do it while I waited.
They wanted to charge me $75! I spoke to the manager Lorne who said that's the price.
It was changed a week ago. I went to European Jewellery in the Eaton Center and had it done for $43, the normal price which includes seals and a pressure test.
Preferred solution: Full refund
Birks @***.Store Director MADINA
I had the worst experience with customer service at Birks at Yorkdale. The store director MADINA is rude and unprofessional.
I cant even describe how rude she was to me and my family over nothing!!! the funny thing is that they haven't replied to my complaint yet!
I told them if i don't get a written apology letter from Birks and its director at Yorkdale i will take it to Media and i will do that for sure!!!
Their behavior was rude and unacceptable and I would never go back to Birks. They are loosing customers this way!!
Birks @ The Core, Calgary, Alberta
A little update: Birks @ The Core (Calgary Downtown) saw this review and had a change of heart. Funny.
Clearly, if you tell them you\'re not happy to their faces they don\'t get it. But, write a review on the internet and suddenly they will what you ask them a month earlier in person! They have agreed to give us the money back and keep their not-so-stellar quality work. The way they went about it really just shows how little they care for their paying customer: when we first started talking to them about the problems with this ring and offered to just return it and be done with this they refused!
Then they simply stopped the work on the new setting when they got a whiff of this review, long before they actually talked to us!
What can I say, stay away from Birks @ The Core unless you are prepared to deal with their attitude.
Thanks to PissedConsumer we don\'t have to deal with that store!!! Perhaps not all of Birks is like this, but the Birks @ The Core in Downtown Calgary is really not worth it.
We bought a $6000 18k white gold solitaire engagement ring there and had some of our other jewelry serviced there. Well, the white gold solitaire stunned us - within 3 weeks (!!!) the so-called white gold fade completely into a dirty looking grayish yellowing color. I am not exaggerating, all it took was 3 weeks. We had white gold before, and for several years it stayed white as it was supposed to. We were aware that the white color of the gold is actually a result of plating with a metal called rhodium. But three weeks??
So, we go in to the store and raise the concern. They tell my wife it's her "body chemistry"!!! What a bunch of bull!! Yes, perhaps it does affect the plating, but three weeks??? We're healthy folks, not ill with anything. And what a way to make a person feel like ***! We had the ring replated, heavy this time. The process takes 4 to 5 weeks because Birks does not have any service done in the city - everything has to be taken to Montreal! So we wait. And wait. The ring was supposed to be re-sized as well as plated. Finally it arrives. Shiny and white again, yes, but resized? No! So, now it will be another 5 weeks before the ring is resized, because the service stuff wrote the wrong thing on their order? No way! So they sped it up and had it done in a week. Wow. Wonder how they did that?
Finally, we get the diamond back . Unbelievably, it started to turn yellow with the week again. Unbelievably! This time, we are asking them to just take the piece of junk and keep it. What sort of product are they selling? And what sort of explanation is it to say that the it's the wearer "body chemistry"? It's like telling an owner of a new car that the fabric of the seat in the car is ripping because of his "body chemistry"??!! It's ***! That's the real reason here! But the store refused to take any responsibility for the problem. They blamed my wife's body chemistry, they even blamed her other ring that the "white" gold was touching up against.
Finally, after, many conversations with the store manager, the agreed, very reluctantly, to reset the ring in a different gold all together. But that's not the end. Remember the other jewelry we had them service? Well, they returned the resized wedding band with strange blotches and spots on the inside, around where the resizing was done. Typically, a normal competent goldsmith will cut a line in a ring to resize it. Not so here. They left clouds, blotches of yellow gold (on a white gold band), spots and dots around the resizing. When said we were not okay with that, that it looked like really poor quality work, the service staff tried to say that it was normal? Since when? Apparently at Birks it is!
They did send it in, the ring came back without the blotches but the clearly incompetent folks over in Montreal took a part of a small inscription off entirely!!! This inscription overs one third of the band, but they somehow couldn't do their resizing and fixing elsewhere. And they did not repair it! Oh no! It was take another 5 weeks or longer, they told me. And plus, apparently we were informed that this might happen! That last bit is a straight out lie.
Would you expect to be lied to by a sales or service rep at the reputable jeweler like Birks? We sure as heck didn't! We ended up taking the ring elsewhere and paying ourself to have the inscription fixed up. But, no, that's not the end of the saga... So, we start wearing the wedding bands after all that... and... well, no the ring is making a black line of on the ring finger!!! Unbelievable. Can't wear a wedding band from 10 years of being married now because it's been services by Birks. We tried to talk to them about it. The service staff's response was that since we are "the only ones" with the issue, I guess it doesn't matter? Plus, she said, all Canadian gold smiths use the same materials... Yeah, except this ring was resized several times in the past, by various Canadian goldsmiths, and it's never made my finger black before!
Bottom line: do not shop at Birks at The Core, and consider avoiding Birks entirely. I also highly recommend taking your jewelry to be serviced anywhere anywhere but at Birks.
Worse customer service I have had
I was recently into Birks Jewllers at the First Canadian Place In Toronto, and was approached by a very rude and usless sales person by the name of Patricia. This person had no idea what she was talking about, and to my observation was useless at trying to gather info. This is the worst store I have been in, and I suggest to anyone to stay away from that one if you want information on anything this year.....it might take them that long to help you..disgusted. I don't know where Birks gets some of its employees, but they need to get rid of the ones that still don't seem to know how to use a computer after years of being there.

That was not outrageous...try $300...and they put in a japanese battery...outright theft. Only found out about it by going somewhere else. I wrote a review if interested.
