Beyond Boundaries = Beyond Disorganzed
My sister and I booked a trip to Iceland in December for a departure date in June. Not only did Beyond Boundaries neglect to contact us within the specified time, but we had to play phone tag several times in order to speak with Daniel, the trip organizer.
We had been asked in March if we would be willing to delay our departure date one day. We could not accommodate new travel dates. Beyond Boundaries informed us that they would work with our schedule. Today, however, we received an email stating that the trip had been canceled due unforeseen circumstances.
The circumstances that exist are lack of organization on behalf of Beyond Boundaries and a staff that is perpetually vacationing and unresponsive.
I have been utterly disappointed with this company, and warn anyone against booking with them.
- Lackadaisical planning
Preferred solution: Full refund
Beyond the Boundaries of Unorganized and Unresponsive...
I recently returned from a trip to Hawaii that I purchased through Beyond Boundaries at the beginning of August, 2014. The representative I worked with was Daniel, but I also had contact with the owner, Doug Lofland. Listed below are the series of negative events I experienced with Beyond Boundaries. The taxi service claimed that the times, locations, and information provided by Beyond Boundaries did not make sense and caused a lot of disorganization and inability to schedule. For example, our itinerary listed our pick up time from the airport as 4:45PM. Our flight arrived at approximately 3:45PM but our cab driver was told to pick us up at 3PM, as per guidance from Beyond Boundaries given to Pono Taxi (cab company) before our arrival. Pono Taxi did not have any of the pick up/drop off times/locations that were listed in the itinerary provided, despite the itinerary stating otherwise. Beyond Boundaries failed to convey the proper times and locations to Pono Taxi in order to make this a worry-free trip for us. Next, when booking our hotel room through Beyond Boundaries, I had requested an "ocean view" room. Our only view was that of one of the other buildings on the hotel property, which completely blocked any chance of having an "ocean view." I paid extra for this feature and when I inquired with the front desk, they said that no mention of a request for an "ocean view" were conveyed on our behalf by Beyond Boundaries. It was disappointing to find out that Beyond Boundaries had not honored our request. Finally, a night or two before we left, I tried to contact Daniel in regard to maps and directions for the bike tour. I tried emailing him and was stunned to find out that he was on vacation during the entire week of our trip, especially since he was our point of contact for any assistance we may have needed. I tried calling the phone number listed in his auto reply email several times, and no one answered. Fortunately, we are resourceful and decided to go out and purchase a guide book which contained several maps of the island. We relied on that completely to help us navigate. All of that being said, I calculated the typical nightly rate offered by Kauai Shores (although I'm sure being a travel company, they offer Beyond Boundaries a discount of some kind) and the cost of the daily taxi rides (between $35-$90 depending on the location), both of which were "included" in the cost that we paid to Beyond Boundaries for this trip. I also added in the cost of the bikes and flights, which were NOT included in what I paid Beyond Boundaries, and in the end I was left wondering what I actually paid Beyond Boundaries $2,000 for.
Just to break it down:
Hotel- 7 nights @ $126/night= $882 Taxi- 2 days @ $35, 3 days @ $90, and 2 days @ $70= $390 (not including tips)
Bikes (not included in amount paid to Beyond Boundaries)- 2 bikes for 5 days @ $25/day/bike + 10% discount= $225 (not including tax)
Airfare (not included in amount paid to Beyond Boundaries)- approx $1300 for 2 people
Grand Total- $2797
Total Included in Cost Paid to Beyond Boundaries- $1272
I booked this 5 months in advance, and wrote a total of 8 emails over the course of 2 months attempting to establish contact before even hearing from Beyond Boundaries after my initial purchase. I thought I had been scammed!
Our taxi service was not properly scheduled by Beyond Boundaries, our requests made through Beyond Boundaries for our hotel accommodations were not conveyed to the concierge and our "trip adviser" was out of the office the entire week of our trip without any follow on contacts who would actually answer their phone in case of an emergency. Not to mention, had we not purchased a guide book, we wouldn't have had any idea where we were going! Essentially, I paid Beyond Boundaries $728 more than what the actual costs were so that I could receive less than mediocre service. They didn't even email to find out how the trip went! We are both active duty soldiers- our money is hard earned. I was deployed when I booked this and was treated like a second class citizen by Beyond Boundaries.
Preferred solution: Refund of at least $728 to make up for the exorbatent cost paid compared to what services were actually received
Beyond Boundaries Travel Delivers Superb Travel with Integrity and Value
Since 1993, when in high school, I have been traveling with Beyond Boundaries Travel as a ski group coordinator for my friends. I've gone on to expand my travel with Beyond Boundaries Travel, but we still talk about those trips and the experience was always top-notch.
When accessing their website today, I accidentally put www.BeyondBoundariesTravel.com in my Google toolbar. I was surprised to see a review claiming $808 of unexpected charges.
Let me say this, no business will ever have a 100% satisfaction rate. I owned a business for over 12 years and of 40 reviews on Google, 39 were 4 stars or greater. The 1 bad review was someone who never bought from my company anyway but was mad we couldn't do something for a completely unrealistic price. Doesn't seem fair, right?
I don't know this reviewer, or the specifics of his situation, but reading some of the comments on the review it would appear that he may be leaving out some important details. As a matter of fact, I would be sure he is.
That said, I want to tell you a true story of my experiences with Beyond Boundaries Travel.
I was part of a group that traveled to Belize Sept 9 - 13 ****. Yes, 2001. I awoke one morning after an exciting day of Catamaran fishing, swimming with sharks, snorkeling, and an evening out with locals to a world turned upside down by 9/11. We were stuck in paradise, not knowing when we could return home, and completely unsure of how exactly I'd afford this unexpectedly elongated stay. Sure, the world had bigger problems, and I don't want to minimize those, but that was our group's problem. We were stuck with no timetable when we could return home, and personally, I was at my budget.
We returned 9/18/01; 5 days over our expected stay.
In stepped Doug and Beyond Boundaries Travel. Doug worked tirelessly to monitor our ever changing flight situation, move all the travel for 20+ people, and procured lodging at prorated, or in most cases pro-Bono, for the additional nights.
This situation was not his responsibility, but he took the onus to help us make it through.
The thing about travel is it can be tricky. Planes get cancelled, the merits of lodging can be misstated/exaggerated, or you can literally get stranded.
You need a trusted partner, and I trust Beyond Boundaries Travel.

Beyond Boundaries Travel has repeatedly exceeded our expectations.
We recently completed our 4th trip with Beyond Boundaries Travel and, once again, have been very impressed with the level of service and detail Beyond Boundaries Travel gives to its clients. After our first trip, it became very apparent that we could not plan a trip ourselves that would include as many fun, exciting, beautiful, culturally enlightening and adventurous activities as Beyond Boundaries Travel planned for us.
We would happily refer anyone thinking of travelling to let Beyond Boundaries Travel make your trip memorable and enjoyable beyond your expectations.
We are already looking forward to our next adventure planned by them.
Do not use Beyond Boundaries Travel!!! We paid $808 of unexpected expenses.
Do not use Beyond Boundaries Travel!!! We paid $808 of unexpected expenses. Our local ski club planned a trip to Egypt with a September 25, 2010 departure date. Beyond Boundaries Travel handled all the arrangements. We were required to fully pay for the trip in advance. Our last payment was made on June 18 three months before departure. We paid $5,738 in advance. At the beginning of September, were told we had to make an additional payment of $708. We told that we were past the trip cancellation date and our choices were: We would could pay the additional $708 or forfeit the $5,738 paid to date. We were shocked. We opted to pay the $708 that we had not budgeted.
Then there was the $100 airport surprise. We checked one bag each for the flight out and the return. We were charged $25 per bag for the flight out and the return a total of $100. Beyond Boundaries booked our flights as two tickets one domestic ticket and one international one ticket. Per Continental Airlines, if the travel agent had booked our flights as one ticket with the domestic and international segments combined they would not have charged the baggage fees on the domestic flights and we would have not been charged the $100.
A travel agency should know how to properly book international flights so its clients will not incur an additional $100 of unnecessary fees.
In summary, we budgeted $5,738 for our trip but paid $6,546, which included $808 of unexpected expenses. We will never schedule a vacation that is in anyway associated with Beyond Boundaries Travel.

If there is a refund problem, the number of weeks between the cancellation and the trip is important. First Beyond Boundaries (BB) say that they can cancel a trip for any reason.
But then it states: "IT WILL NOT CANCEL A TRIP LESS THAN 8 WEEKS BEFORE DEPARTURE EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF FORCE MAJEURE, CONSOLIDATION, OR THE CLIENT'S FAILURE TO PAY THE FINAL BALANCE. IF A TRIP IS CANCELLED DUE TO CONSOLIDATION OR FORCE MAJEURE, THE CLIENT MAY CHOOSE A FULL REFUND OF ALL PAYMENTS MADE OR AN ALTERNATIVE TRIP OFFERED BY BEYOND BOUNDARIES TRAVEL." This appears to be a contractual obligation by BB that within 8 weeks it cannot cancel the trip without given a FULL, let me repeat FULL refund, except for 2 reasons: a) a force majeure - something big beyond their control, and b) consolidation - not enough people have signed up to meet the minimum number for the trip (normally 30).
There are three important aspects to this contract: BB is in Colorado and the case has to be heard in Colorado,[if over a certain amount think federal court there] and not in some foreign country, b) I did not see a requirement for mediation, nor c) did I see a prevailing party attorney fees provision. I believe most states require a travel agency to put up a bond to cover the cost of such damages so there may be a bond out of which you could get your refund.
I would see an attorney. JrOrlando
