Beyond Boundaries = Beyond Disorganzed

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My sister and I booked a trip to Iceland in December for a departure date in June. Not only did Beyond Boundaries neglect to contact us within the specified time, but we had to play phone tag several times in order to speak with Daniel, the trip organizer.

We had been asked in March if we would be willing to delay our departure date one day. We could not accommodate new travel dates. Beyond Boundaries informed us that they would work with our schedule. Today, however, we received an email stating that the trip had been canceled due unforeseen circumstances.

The circumstances that exist are lack of organization on behalf of Beyond Boundaries and a staff that is perpetually vacationing and unresponsive.

I have been utterly disappointed with this company, and warn anyone against booking with them.

If there is a refund problem, the number of weeks between the cancellation and the trip is important. First Beyond Boundaries (BB) say that they can cancel a trip for any reason.

But then it states: "IT WILL NOT CANCEL A TRIP LESS THAN 8 WEEKS BEFORE DEPARTURE EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF FORCE MAJEURE, CONSOLIDATION, OR THE CLIENT'S FAILURE TO PAY THE FINAL BALANCE. IF A TRIP IS CANCELLED DUE TO CONSOLIDATION OR FORCE MAJEURE, THE CLIENT MAY CHOOSE A FULL REFUND OF ALL PAYMENTS MADE OR AN ALTERNATIVE TRIP OFFERED BY BEYOND BOUNDARIES TRAVEL." This appears to be a contractual obligation by BB that within 8 weeks it cannot cancel the trip without given a FULL, let me repeat FULL refund, except for 2 reasons: a) a force majeure - something big beyond their control, and b) consolidation - not enough people have signed up to meet the minimum number for the trip (normally 30).

There are three important aspects to this contract: BB is in Colorado and the case has to be heard in Colorado,[if over a certain amount think federal court there] and not in some foreign country, b) I did not see a requirement for mediation, nor c) did I see a prevailing party attorney fees provision. I believe most states require a travel agency to put up a bond to cover the cost of such damages so there may be a bond out of which you could get your refund.

I would see an attorney. JrOrlando

Beyond the Boundaries of Unorganized and Unresponsive...

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I recently returned from a trip to Hawaii that I purchased through Beyond Boundaries at the beginning of August, 2014. The representative I worked with was Daniel, but I also had contact with the owner, Doug Lofland. Listed below are the series of negative events I experienced with Beyond Boundaries. The taxi service claimed that the times, locations, and information provided by Beyond Boundaries did not make sense and caused a lot of disorganization and inability to schedule. For example, our itinerary listed our pick up time from the airport as 4:45PM. Our flight arrived at approximately 3:45PM but our cab driver was told to pick us up at 3PM, as per guidance from Beyond Boundaries given to Pono Taxi (cab company) before our arrival. Pono Taxi did not have any of the pick up/drop off times/locations that were listed in the itinerary provided, despite the itinerary stating otherwise. Beyond Boundaries failed to convey the proper times and locations to Pono Taxi in order to make this a worry-free trip for us. Next, when booking our hotel room through Beyond Boundaries, I had requested an "ocean view" room. Our only view was that of one of the other buildings on the hotel property, which completely blocked any chance of having an "ocean view." I paid extra for this feature and when I inquired with the front desk, they said that no mention of a request for an "ocean view" were conveyed on our behalf by Beyond Boundaries. It was disappointing to find out that Beyond Boundaries had not honored our request. Finally, a night or two before we left, I tried to contact Daniel in regard to maps and directions for the bike tour. I tried emailing him and was stunned to find out that he was on vacation during the entire week of our trip, especially since he was our point of contact for any assistance we may have needed. I tried calling the phone number listed in his auto reply email several times, and no one answered. Fortunately, we are resourceful and decided to go out and purchase a guide book which contained several maps of the island. We relied on that completely to help us navigate. All of that being said, I calculated the typical nightly rate offered by Kauai Shores (although I'm sure being a travel company, they offer Beyond Boundaries a discount of some kind) and the cost of the daily taxi rides (between $35-$90 depending on the location), both of which were "included" in the cost that we paid to Beyond Boundaries for this trip. I also added in the cost of the bikes and flights, which were NOT included in what I paid Beyond Boundaries, and in the end I was left wondering what I actually paid Beyond Boundaries $2,000 for.

Just to break it down:

Hotel- 7 nights @ $126/night= $882 Taxi- 2 days @ $35, 3 days @ $90, and 2 days @ $70= $390 (not including tips)

Bikes (not included in amount paid to Beyond Boundaries)- 2 bikes for 5 days @ $25/day/bike + 10% discount= $225 (not including tax)

Airfare (not included in amount paid to Beyond Boundaries)- approx $1300 for 2 people

Grand Total- $2797

Total Included in Cost Paid to Beyond Boundaries- $1272

I booked this 5 months in advance, and wrote a total of 8 emails over the course of 2 months attempting to establish contact before even hearing from Beyond Boundaries after my initial purchase. I thought I had been scammed!

Our taxi service was not properly scheduled by Beyond Boundaries, our requests made through Beyond Boundaries for our hotel accommodations were not conveyed to the concierge and our "trip adviser" was out of the office the entire week of our trip without any follow on contacts who would actually answer their phone in case of an emergency. Not to mention, had we not purchased a guide book, we wouldn't have had any idea where we were going! Essentially, I paid Beyond Boundaries $728 more than what the actual costs were so that I could receive less than mediocre service. They didn't even email to find out how the trip went! We are both active duty soldiers- our money is hard earned. I was deployed when I booked this and was treated like a second class citizen by Beyond Boundaries.

Beyond Boundaries Travel Delivers Superb Travel with Integrity and Value

Since 1993, when in high school, I have been traveling with Beyond Boundaries Travel as a ski group coordinator for my friends. I've gone on to expand my travel with Beyond Boundaries Travel, but we still talk about those trips and the experience was always top-notch.

When accessing their website today, I accidentally put www.BeyondBoundariesTravel.com in my Google toolbar. I was surprised to see a review claiming $808 of unexpected charges.

Let me say this, no business will ever have a 100% satisfaction rate. I owned a business for over 12 years and of 40 reviews on Google, 39 were 4 stars or greater. The 1 bad review was someone who never bought from my company anyway but was mad we couldn't do something for a completely unrealistic price. Doesn't seem fair, right?

I don't know this reviewer, or the specifics of his situation, but reading some of the comments on the review it would appear that he may be leaving out some important details. As a matter of fact, I would be sure he is.

That said, I want to tell you a true story of my experiences with Beyond Boundaries Travel.

I was part of a group that traveled to Belize Sept 9 - 13 ****. Yes, 2001. I awoke one morning after an exciting day of Catamaran fishing, swimming with sharks, snorkeling, and an evening out with locals to a world turned upside down by 9/11. We were stuck in paradise, not knowing when we could return home, and completely unsure of how exactly I'd afford this unexpectedly elongated stay. Sure, the world had bigger problems, and I don't want to minimize those, but that was our group's problem. We were stuck with no timetable when we could return home, and personally, I was at my budget.

We returned 9/18/01; 5 days over our expected stay.

In stepped Doug and Beyond Boundaries Travel. Doug worked tirelessly to monitor our ever changing flight situation, move all the travel for 20+ people, and procured lodging at prorated, or in most cases pro-Bono, for the additional nights.

This situation was not his responsibility, but he took the onus to help us make it through.

The thing about travel is it can be tricky. Planes get cancelled, the merits of lodging can be misstated/exaggerated, or you can literally get stranded.

You need a trusted partner, and I trust Beyond Boundaries Travel.

My experiences on a long ski trip with 5 of my friends planned by Beyond Boundaries were greatly amplified due to BB's exceptional service, foresight and on-the-fly trip adjustments. From providing our vacation itinerary to finding great deals on lodging and food, we were able to comfortably enjoy 5 ski resorts and only have one responsibility - skiing all day! I would highly recommend Beyond Boundaries to anyone looking to plan an adventure.

I was on the same Beyond Boundaries Travel Egypt Bike and Sail Tour as Kerry and it was excellent. The logistics were well-planned, the sites along the route were unique, and the route was so original. I would gladly go on a tour organized by Beyond Boundaries Travel and would happily recommend Beyond Boundaries Travel to anyone.

Beyond Boundaries Travel organized an excellent Egypt Bike and Cruise Program for us during Xmas 2010. Well organized, well executed........everything about the trip was first rate. I agree with the reviewer and would be happy to recommend Beyond Boundaries Travel to anyone

As the owner of Friendship Tours,Inc for 38 years . I have been working with Beyond Boundaries Travel and Colorado International since 1997.

I have booked a average of about 3 group trips a year. My group sizes range from 30 to 60 passengers, all traveling from differnt locations in America .My customers are totally satisfide how much help is afforded to them while we are under way. Many times I as the owner can't not travel with them and they are on their own. When ever a situation popped up they were helped.

They have provided me with excellent suppliers World wide. I only offer International trips. So with that you know people get nervous about traveling abroad. All their worries are put to rest.

Working continuosly with this family, I get better deals and breaks in contract interpetation.

I am not one to shop around each year for other suppliers to save a dollar I know I get a good and fair contract. I would recommend Beyond Boundaries Travel to anyone looking to lead trips

Beyond Boundaries Travel has repeatedly exceeded our expectations.

We recently completed our 4th trip with Beyond Boundaries Travel and, once again, have been very impressed with the level of service and detail Beyond Boundaries Travel gives to its clients. After our first trip, it became very apparent that we could not plan a trip ourselves that would include as many fun, exciting, beautiful, culturally enlightening and adventurous activities as Beyond Boundaries Travel planned for us.

We would happily refer anyone thinking of travelling to let Beyond Boundaries Travel make your trip memorable and enjoyable beyond your expectations.

We are already looking forward to our next adventure planned by them.

Do not use Beyond Boundaries Travel!!! We paid $808 of unexpected expenses.

Do not use Beyond Boundaries Travel!!! We paid $808 of unexpected expenses. Our local ski club planned a trip to Egypt with a September 25, 2010 departure date. Beyond Boundaries Travel handled all the arrangements. We were required to fully pay for the trip in advance. Our last payment was made on June 18 three months before departure. We paid $5,738 in advance. At the beginning of September, were told we had to make an additional payment of $708. We told that we were past the trip cancellation date and our choices were: We would could pay the additional $708 or forfeit the $5,738 paid to date. We were shocked. We opted to pay the $708 that we had not budgeted.

Then there was the $100 airport surprise. We checked one bag each for the flight out and the return. We were charged $25 per bag for the flight out and the return a total of $100. Beyond Boundaries booked our flights as two tickets one domestic ticket and one international one ticket. Per Continental Airlines, if the travel agent had booked our flights as one ticket with the domestic and international segments combined they would not have charged the baggage fees on the domestic flights and we would have not been charged the $100.

A travel agency should know how to properly book international flights so its clients will not incur an additional $100 of unnecessary fees.

In summary, we budgeted $5,738 for our trip but paid $6,546, which included $808 of unexpected expenses. We will never schedule a vacation that is in anyway associated with Beyond Boundaries Travel.

Wow, I am not sure who this person is that has written the review on Beyond Boundaries Travel. I first I would like to say that I started working with them when they were know as Colorado International.

Back in the 1980's in those days they specialized in group ski trips and worked with ski clubs. After several years of running ski trips in the western part of the US I started using them to run ski trips to Europe. One of the things we did when we ran a ski trips to Europe was to extend the trip and visit a European city. This tour operator has a vast knowledge of the cities in Europe.

Over the years I have used this company for 20 trips which mostly consisted from European ski trips with extended stays in European cities to trips, as well as to Costa Rica and Greek Island Cruse and other places. Yes they did change their name about ten years ago or so, but this was only to be able to change with the tour industry and sell trips throughout the world. I too have had trouble with airline seating and I know for a fact that the kind of problem this person had was caused by the airline and not the agent, and the agent could not have corrected it.

I have found that Beyond Boundaries Travel has the knowledge and experience of their travel throughout the world to put together any trip I would want to run. Also they have met all my requests within reason and I would not hesitate to recommend them for any other trip you would run.

I have been on 5-6 tours with Beyond Boundaries through their HP Fan Trips and they have been nothing short of exceptional! The staff and management make every detail outstanding and true to life.

If there are "glitches" it is not their error - sometimes things happen when traveling and the operators have no control. I would definitely travel with them - over and over again!

Thoughtful, meaningful, terrific trips

I've taken several Beyond Boundaries trips - and I can say that they've all been terrific and well worth the money. We first started going on the HP Fan Trips because my son was such a Harry Potter fan. Each trip was carefully crafted to integrate wonderful sites, experiences, story tellers and top notch guides. Riding in the coach car on the original "Hogwarts Express", taking alchemy classes, the gala banquet - it was all just wonderful - and we so enjoyed the unexpected extra benefit of meeting people and guides who have become dear friends years after the tours.

On several trips fan trips, we've had the opportunity to meet a variety of actors from the movies, books and plays - and to get some really fascinating behind the scene opportunities to explore different elements. The beauty in these trips is not just in the elements themselves - but in the totality of the tours.

We've always found the trips reasonably priced - as we've itemized the elements to see if it's a good bargain - and it's always been more than fair.

Some of the most meaningful travel experiences my family has ever had has experienced have been on Beyond Boundaries Travel trips - and we can't thank them enough for giving us such wonderful experiences for our family to share together and with friends.

I have had the privilege of leading my ski club for the last 25 years and have used Beyond Boundaries, almost exclusively, for all of our European trips and for some of our domestic ski trips. We have never been disappointed by our destinations, lodging or pricing over all those years.

With an average of about 30 to 60 people on these trips, needless to say, there is an extreme amount of coordination required and they have seldom failed to deliver. There will always be glitches due to land agents trying to squeeze out an extra buck but there has only been a few times where, I felt, it was Beyond Boundaries fault and these were addressed or adjusted to my satisfaction.

Overall, we will continue to solicit bids for creative, interesting, diverse and memorable trips from Beyond Boundaries, as we have for the last 25+ years.

Doug and his team have allowed many of our people visits parts of the world that we only dreamed of and we are all appreciative. I highly recommend them.

I've used Beyond Boundaries Travel, and their previous name, for years and have had fantastic trips. I recently used them for a sailing hiking trip on the Amalfi Coast, Italy and there was not one single complaint. We are now working on a bike trip in Hawaii and I look forward to another smooth trip.

I have been a customer of Beyond Boundaries Travel since they opened their doors in 1991, having traveled with them to Costa Rica, Colorado, Utah, North Carolina and New Mexico, and all arrangements were perfectly and professionally handled.

I agree with all of the positive reviews listed below based on years of experience traveling with them, and find it odd that Yelp is filtering all of those in favor of a single review from a person who has never even been a customer of the company. What's that all about?

I would highly recommend working with them as they offer a fountain of great travel ideas to many locations, and are very conscientious in their handling of customer concerns.

I have another review of BBT I'd like to share:

Plenty F is way off base in her review and I find it appalling that Yelp would allow such nonsense as her review seems to have no basis in actual experience with the company beyond a short conversation with one of its representatives.

I have had 13 years of experience in working with Beyond Boundaries, most recently to Egypt on a Nile cruise in 2011, and I can attest to the fact that the arrangements were first rate, the follow-through was complete and there has never been any reason for me to doubt their commitment to professionalism.

I would happily work with Beyond Boundaries again for any future trips I will be planning.

I am a friend of Hei Nan Gua, and have the same impression of the reviewer's motives. They are unfair, cynically motivated, and way off the mark given my own experiences with Beyond Boundaries as a very professional company. I too have a review as follows from another customer that I am posting as follows:

Beyond Boundaries helped us plan a recent family trip to Puerto Rico. We were very appreciative of the individual attention we received. They listened carefully to what we said we wanted to do, answered questions that had come up based on our reading about Puerto Rico, and gave us prompt and accurate advice about travel arrangements, numerous suggestions for accommodations, and recommendations for places to visit and things to do, helping us fine-tune our plans. They obviously are seasoned and enthusiastic travelers themselves as well as experienced travel agents. They were sensitive to our interests as travelers and knowledgeable about the particularities of the destination, and able to advise us about off-the-beaten-track locations ("beyond the boundaries") as well as give sensible advice about negotiating the mainstream places (for example, spend your last night at the airport hotel - worth it for the convenience with an early morning flight).

We had an extremely interesting and enjoyable vacation, definitely better than it would have been without the expert advice we received from "BBs".

We booked an Egypt Bike and Sail trip with Beyond Boundaries Travel for April 2012. Everything came together exactly as advertised. Doug Lofland of Beyond Boundaries was the US/EU organizer. A large Cairo based company called Flash delivered the services in Egypt.

The pyramids, temples, and tombs are timeless. No need to provide any report. The sail portion was on the boat 'Magic I'. The boat was first class and exceeded our expectations by a wide margin [especially having heard some rather disparaging things about Egypt. The guiding services were in the top 20% of our 30 plus guided tours to out of the way countries. Despite recent unrest, we felt safer in Egypt than in many parts of NYC, Detroit, Chicago, or LA. Seeing rural Egypt from the saddle of a bicycle provided the chance to interact with daily life in a way that is never possible while riding a tour bus. And, most incredible was the chance to to experience all the antiquities without the normal crowds. We were frequently the only visitors in tombs and temple rooms.

We paid a fine price for the value received. I'm sure others on the tour boat paid less. But they also received less. Substantially less.

Most impressive however, was the support provided by Beyond Boundaries. Doug Lofland selflessly invested time to help us understand what we were getting into -- both 'normal' Egypt as well as Egypt a year after uprisings. Then he invested a great deal more time working with Flash and with local authorities getting all the pieces of the tour worked out. It seems that many things changed after the uprising and the tour had to go through local approvals all over again [such is life in Egypt]. We received a final itinerary which was substantially equivalent to the itinerary posted on the web. And the ultimate delivery in Egypt exactly matched the final itinerary.

Thanks for a great job -- Doug, Flash, and Beyond Boundaries.

And yet another.....

My family and I went on the HP Fan Trip to Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the end of May 1012. HP Fan Trips is either owned by or is a division of Beyond Boundaries Travel.

They say to expect magical, and they mean it. My kids can't stop bragging to their friends about the trip. Not everything went perfectly, but the staff worked hard to fix the few problems that popped up. The story teller was incredible which did wonders for my kids. They can at times get out of hand, but she was very good at keeping the kids focused. All the activities were fun and informative. I loved the birds. The highlight of it all was a night at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for only our group. This was extremely cool because there were no lines anywhere. We rode as many times as we wanted. The food was good and I spent too much money in the shops, but we were on vacations. It really is like stepping into the Harry Potter books.

I couldn't rate 5 stars because of the minor problems, but I would have gone 4 1/2 stars if yelp allowed it, because of the way they handled the problems.

And another.....

We just returned from a Beyond Boundaries trip in Scotland that we purchased through Groupon and the service we received was excellent. Everything about the trip was as advertised. Jeannie was very responsive to my numerous questions and the written material we received before the trip was excellent. Another reviewer complained of unexpected charges, but we only paid what was described in the Beyond Boundaries description of the trip. If the agency offers another trip that interests us, I would not hesitate to book it!

OK, I keep seeing that someone keeps trying to re-post that and is un-justly trying to do harm to a company that I have used many times in the past.

I suggest you consider removing this as the company has ample reason to take you to court for many spurious comments.

Meanwhile, I have many positive comments about Beyond Boundaries that I am going to post here that you will find on Yelp, under filtered reviews, which itself unfairly filters customer reviews in order to get companies to advertise with them. In any case, here is the first of many positive reviews that I suggest you take notice of:

We booked a Nile Cruise though B.B. with a groupon . I live in Milwaukee. We booked in March and left in October. When I was deciding to book I spoke with Doug for quite a long time, he was a wealth of info. for our whole trip which included Turkey and Jorden. Every time I called he helped me with organizing my vacation even though most of it was not booked though his company. When time came for the cruise they had a hard time finding us a ship due to troubles in the middle east. We ended up with an upgrade and one of the best deals I have ever had. Everything thing was perfect and I cant imagine they made any money with the deal we got on this Groupon. I recommend their company and knowledge, we had a wonderful time with no hassles and enjoyed many other activites we probably wouldnt have found without Dougs knowledge of the area. Thank You Doug

I think the reviewer is probably not telling the whole story re: the extra $708 due-why would they just say "give us $700" and not explain why? What was the reason? Sounds like he's (she's) not telling us something...I highly doubt this was 'unexpected'.

Guest

OK, enough. I find the reviewer's comments to be naive and uninformed.

I was a member of one of the groups that traveled on the same trip as the reviewer, and I knew one of the members of the board that made decisions on this trip.

I was told that the owner of the company came to meet with the group nearly a year before travel, and advised us that, since the group was doubling in size, we should seriously consider moving up the timetable for airline ticketing as changes in fuel surcharges were always a possibilitiy.

The executive board declined to do that, and the result was the airline raised the fuel surcharges and we had no time to adjust because the executive board did not allow the tour company to help us by moving up the deadline........which could have helped us a lot.

I don't know what universe the reviewer has been living in, but airline fuel surcharges are a fact of life.......they are not the responsibility of the tour company; airlines are allowed to charge what they want. The price of gas goes up by a penny and airlines raise the fuel surcharges by $100......only they call them necessary fare increases due to increased labor costs.......and they let tour companies take the blame.

This was not the fault of the tour company; it was the fault of our executive board for not taking the advice of the tour company, and for not reacting sooner to a problem that was clearly pointed out to us beforehand.

Bottom line - the reviewer's comments are grossly unfair and do not recognize where the source of the problem was.

If you read the comments from several Groupon customers for this company, you will find many positive remarks about them. I traveled with them to Egypt this past May and had a wonderful experience. You need not worry about them.

That's really unfortunate about the surcharges, but aside from that, how was the cruise? I am considering buying a groupon to use this coming dec.

and at $600 per person, seems like a great deal (arranging own airfare) Did you do any of the excursions?

How was the food and drink on board?

Thanks so much!

Guest

Um, all of you commenting on the $100 baggage fees--get with it. The real problem is with that surprise $700 demanded after the $5700 fully paid 3 months prior to departure.

Seriously, thank you for posting the critque of this company--when I saw their "deal" on groupon--as usual--I grew suspicious. Glad I checked!
