We gave Bachmeier Custom Homes a down payment to hold a lot for us with the expectation that we would hire him to build a home. A few weeks later we found him too hard to work with. I think he builds a quality home, but he only wants to use his sources and his subs to build the kind of custom home that he is accustomed to building. I would call him a semi-custom home builder. For example, we went back and forth for days trying to settle on siding. Bachmeier had to use his siding guy, who gave him a good price, and would only consider siding supplied by his lumber yard. Basically I had the choice of seamed metal siding, or Hardieboard. The fiber cement was not fitting our budget and the boxed siding looked awful. It was enough of a hassle that we did not want to get knee deep into a home build with Bachmeier when we were losing confidence in him. We found a better contractor before we sold our existing home and before Bachmeier did anything for us. Still, he kept our down payment, which perplexes me to this day.
