Phony Late Fee and Damage Claim

I had rented a vehicle for one day from Aurora Inn & Suites and had made sure to return it on time without damage. I dropped the keys off with an employee without receiving a receipt and walked away thinking I was good to go. A week later the company had pulled $500.00 from my bank account without any notification as to why. It turns out after calling Aurora Inn & Suites I'm being held responsible for returning the vehicle 6 days late and damage fees. Either the company runs a shady business or they are employing a dishonest person. My experience with these guys have been very negative. I'm not entirely sure how to combat this phony claim.
