No contact from the Arts Centre.Instead received an apology from the Australian Ballet who were not in any way responsible for the problem.I am outraged that a problem caused by the poor management of the Arts Centre appears to have been dumped on the Australian Ballet, who have no responsibility for seating patrons in the auditorium at Australian Ballet performances.

Original review Feb 25, 2022
On February 25 at the opening night of the Australian Ballet's new production of Anna Karenina, I was in the State Theatre foyer at least 15 minutes before the performance commencement.
The queue at all doors to the auditorium were at least 12 metres long and barely moving.
Announcements were made that the performance would commence on time and those customers not seated would be locked out until a suitable break in the performance but may not be able to be seated in their booked seats. This was more threatening and stressful than helpful for people waiting in the various queues
As I finally reached the head of the queue at door 3, I was redirected to doors 1 or 4 where I could see the queues were even longer.
When I complained to the usherette that this would not help seat people, she said the ballet is about to start and slammed the door in my face.
I jumped the queue at door 1 to gain entry as the only solution I could think of.
There were no staff to assist you to find your seats.
It is obvious that the Arts Centre is incapable of managing the State Theatre. They must have been aware that it was a full house but did not provide the essential resources to manage seating customers.
This is not a single incident as there were equally chaotic delays at the opening night of the Australian Ballet's Gala Program at the end of last year and the performance started 15 minutes late.
Pros:
  • It is the major melbourne theatrical venue
Cons:
  • Inadequate staff resources

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution

User's recommendation: Don't attend performances there until the management address the problem successfully
