Avoid Apricorn biometric drive or risk data loss

The Apricorn company sells a biometric hard drive that encrypts the data on it so if you lose it your data is protected. What they don't tell you in their manual or on line is that if you don't make a backup copy of the special password file, you also cannot retrieve your data if something happens to the biometric.

This happened to me and now I have lost 2 years worth of critical data. You may say "back up, ***". Well, this was my backup. The cheap fingerprint scanner tore away from the board and now it won't work. I didn't know about this XML file that is the secret decryption file and now all Apricorn will do is replace the drive. Well, duh, how about my data??

Don't waste your money or else read this and learn to burn the secret XML file to a CD and put it into your safe and hope it works when you need it. Of course, I have no way to find out if that even works.

Wow, you use an external hard drive as a backup but do not keep your data any place else. So this was not a "backup" it was a main drive that was not backed up anyplace else.

Everyone knows that ALL hard drives fail. Keep a backup of your data in at least 2 places.
