Angies List in Palos Park, Illinois - Angie's List has deceptive billing practices.
In October of 2013 Angie's List tried to obtain (unbeknownst to me) a $28 renewal fee from my PayPal account; however there was only $14.50 in the account. I guess the account was linked to my checking account at my local bank because PayPal took out the additional needed to pay the renewal, all unknown to me. (My PayPal account is linked to an occasionally used email address I have). When I found this out months later after trying to tap into my PayPal account and having no balance, I tried to cancel my Angie's List membership. Rather than allow a cancellation over the internet, they require you to talk to a service representative, just as if you were trying to cancel your AOL (remember?) No thanks, Angie!

Angies List in Chicago, Illinois - Ripp off
Had a subscription for a 1 yr and they did nothing but bug with emails for reviews on people that I saved but never used on their site. Also they never contacted me via email saying my time was to renew was close and just charged my account what were they afraid to ask cuz I would cancel. I do not feel that this is worth the money. No great deals or contractors. What is this neighbor *** either you use someone or you don't all they want is your money and when I cancelled never asked why? You would think they would want to better their service
How Angies List Works from Both Sides
I've been an Angies list member for several years, though to be honest I never really relied on the service that much. Then I went to work for a contractor........Knowing how Angie and her list work from the other side is really, really eye opening. They advertise that service providers cannot pay to be on their list, yet the contractor I work for had a $1,000 a month, yes...$12,000 a year, contract. They break areas up by zones and within each zone is a town so if you have to pay for each town where you want to be listed, or in their terms "advertise". We've considered not advertising at all on Angies list and was told by their rep that then we would not show up on the first page when customers searched for our service. I then tried to clarify and asked that even if a customer searched for our company by name we may not show up on the first page unless we were advertising. Mind you advertising on their site pretty much just means paying for your company listing to show up higher up on the list, no banner or logo etc. He explained to me that it was kind of like searching on google and the companies that are doing adwords are showing up first........yeah I get that but when you do a google or other search engine you can tell which are the ads, Angies list does not show any distinction in the listing that some service providers are paying to show up higher on the list. Then there is the skimming. Run a big deal coupon and they take 40% of the price then badger the purchaser to write a review, that is how they collect the reviews. They are constantly trying to get you to run big deals, advertise in their print magazine and now they are introducing this concierge service where the customer would book the appointment through Angies list............that just has disaster written all over it. No fee for that service to contractors yet.....but literature made it very clear that a fee would likely be charged in future if you took advantage of the service. Keep in mind that Angies is really relying on local, small businesses. There are such better ways to get references for service providers......just ask your neighbors and co workers, post on your facebook page asking for references or use some of the online, and free, community news services such as EveryBlock or NextDoor. Even a free service like Home Advisor is a better bet. There is a reason Angies has posted negative revenues for a straight 17 years. All in all I would not say I am pissed, just enlightened! Don't believe her claim that contractors don't pay.
Angies List in East Moline, Illinois - A Copy of Complaint
We are so displeased with Angies list! You edit our comments but yet you allow a customer to make comments that we threatened their customer and put it on the site and it is so totally untrue and unsubstantiated? We are very upset about this and when I called you on 7/12/13. You were non responsive as you were in addressing the other issue with the caller we didn’t even assist. You are hurting our business not helping us and your company is not doing as promised. We are cancelling our contract with you and DO NOT expect to pay any further fees or costs. Any payment will be stopped by our financial institution. We feel you have breached our contract agreement with your company and have not assisted us in building our business but have aided in hurting our business. We had an A rating prior to “paying” for a ????? and now have two F rating due to crazy people making untrue allegations because ??? and you post it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have reviewed comments at the BBB site and have read that other contractors have had similar issues to this and have written the Better Business Bureau. We will be writing to the BBB as well to report the inequities and non resolution to issues we have had. We will be sharing our experiences with other contractor and customers and educating them to read the comments at the BBB We are cancelling our contract with you for not doing the service as promised.
We signed up as a business with an enhanced listing and were told we would get tons of leads - got none. We also put an ad in the monthly book and was told it was mailed to 100K members in the Chicago area - later found out it was mailed to only half as many. A...View full review
Angies List in Chicago, Illinois - It felt like I was talking to a used car salesman!!
My experience was the same as buying my first car. Angie's List was speaking to me as if I was an *** even though I was asking questions. Its amazing this company has a way for us (consumers) to throw companies under the bus but no one to express our frustration in regards to them. How convenient.. When I asked to speak to his boss he ( the Angie's List sales guy) didn't want to give me the name or contact at first but finally did after 10 min of arguing and made it clear that his boss was going to feel the same way as him and that I'm wasting my time. Scam artist!! Stay away from Angie's List! Also fyi Angie's List takes money from companies to clear their names and make these companies look like angels.
