Angie's List just now started hiding reviews below B rating from subscribers

Angie's List now has secretly begun a policy called 'On Deck' engine, that masks search results of providers with lower than a B average rating, leaving subscribers to conclude that their 'no-hit' search must mean there are no reviews on the sought provider.(I discovered this after submitting an "F" report on an auto repair facility that fraudulently insisted I new brakes & rotors, which I documented by immediately taking the vehicle to a Hyundai dealer who confirmed in a report that the brakes & rotors were in no need of service.) I wrote a detailed review which Angie's List accepted and filed in my submitted reviews, however, when I tried to find it by a search, the report and provider resulted as a 'no hit.' I called Angie's List and was advised that this was holey due to 'On Deck.' I asked for an explanation in writing and received the following: Tier2 Member Care Sep 25 (2 days ago) Thank you for speaking with me today. Per your request, here is an explanation of our On Deck program: The On Deck program was implemented by our Executive Team in an effort to provide our members with the best information possible when searching the List. Our research indicates that 90% of our members come to Angie’s List looking for highly rated providers by performing a category or keyword search. Given this, any provider with less than 2 reviews and an overall grade lower than a ‘B’ is considered On Deck and excluded from category or keyword searches. These providers are still visible by searching for the provider by name. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Thanks Again, Angie’s List l Tier 2 Member Care 1030 E Washington St Indianapolis, IN 46202 866.625.5478 ext 75589 bradleyw@***.com Fax: 317.632.3831 ****************************************************************** I, in turn, replied: Thank you for responding with an explanation of Angie's List's 'On Deck ' program. I must persist in warning your company that you are playing with fire, if the company continues to mask* undesirable service providers without any disclosures to the public. Case in point: Is Dr. Gwen Korovin**, accessible on Angie's List's New York City's Health providers? What if this doctor was 'On Decked' due to negative reviews and one of your subscribers used her services after a 'no-hit' search due to poor reviews and this subscriber subsequently died? ** Dr. Gwen Korovan is under investigation for medical malpractice in the negligent death of Joan Rivers. * The term mask might be deemed an inappropriate depiction of 'On Deck' within the confines of the Angie's List organization, but be assured, it would be one of several negative terms used by the press and in litigation in the real world. How did 'On Deck' make it past your corporate attorneys?

Six months to receive a refund from Angie's List

In July, 2014, I purchased pool service through Angie's List. However, due to the distance he would have to travel to our home, the contractor declined to service provide service, and he immediately notified Angie's List. Angie's Customer Service ignored the contractor's request. When I followed up the Customer Service, they claimed because 30 days had past, I had waived my right to a refund. With the contractor's repeated attempts over the next six months to get Angie's List to refund my money, and with my multiple correspondences, 6 months later, I finally received the refund in December. I Don't Love You Angie

This situation is a few years old, but after seeing more of Angie's lying-*** commercials, it needs posting. After going through bad vet after bad vet down in the Atlanta area, I used Angie's list to find one. Somehow, after a number of tests on my dog, the vet could still tell me NOTHING DEFINITIVE. Yet, the bill was close to $800.00. Eight HUNDRED dollars and I got nothing. I went on Angie's and blasted this vet. My critique was the only one for this vet. Yet, not even a week later, another critique showed up telling how wonderful this vet was. A couple month's later, I checked again and the same two critiques existed for this vet. I called Angie's and asked if they didn't find that a little suspicious. They gave me a bunch of bolly about how others are entitled to their opinions, too. Nice. They completely missed my point, though intentionally. Is it not suspicious? You decide. If you want to pay Angie's, you can still see only the same two critiques, (I'm making a really good guess, but I'll bet you). An email to Angie's also got me nowhere. You can pay for Angie's but, it's a complete waste of money.

This site much better than Angie's list

Guest

I called and reported some reviews I thought were questionable and they just argued with me.

Guest

Angies list lost all credibility in my mind when they started booking work for contractors. They can't offer independent reviews and act as a booking agent as well.

Good point. Can anyone say, uh, conflict of interest?

Watch how fast your doctor says it if you try to offer him/her contract services. They don't want to get caught in that debacle.

Guest

Another thing to note is there IS nasty little companies that probe the web looking for bad juice on companies and trying to rid or reverse it. Naturally, their services are engaged. Anything to hide the truth.

Guest

I asked them to check some reviews I found questionable and they refused

Yes, you, me, and lots more. Now, it acts as if it's an advertising source for businesses because I'm starting to see advertising like 'favored on Angie's List.' They have their advertising.

You and I have word of mouth. Use it often.

Angie's list - a bit of a scam

Firstly they offered a free subscription (but I was required to give my credit card and stupidly I did). When they then billed me I called to complain that I didn't want the ongoing paid subscription. They refunded my money back and said as a courtesy they would let me use the system for a year. When the year was up (recently) they automatically billed my card again. This time I had a tougher time but finally got my money refunded and any possible subscription cancelled. Note: I wouldn't mind paying a subscription if I though I was getting any value but the couple of times I tried to use it I had very poor responses.

Angie's list is a ripoff. The contractors you call always have someway of getting around the deals listed on angie's list. Also once you give them your credit card, you cannot delete it off you account so they just keep renewing and renewing. I will be talking to all my friends and telling them to stay away from paying thirty nine dollars for nothing. I know it doesn't do any good to complain because there is no satisfaction guarantee even a few days after they take money from your account. no more for me, I will have to change my credit card number to get away from them.

Angie's List Member That Lie & And Are Allowed To Ruin Our Reputation

I called to find out if they were available they said they could go over the house, give a price and then go to work the next day. My fear was because they had a $250 coupon that there rates would be jacked up to give the appearance they where giving you a discount. Prior to them coming we had gotten prices from both Lowes and Home depot to we had an idea. There charges would have been 3 times the amount the store would have charged me. So much for coupons and deals, it would have worked out to over $100 hour per worker. good money. . I was strange when I asked if I should buy the coupon on line she was insisted that they would just give me the discount and not to worry purchasing it on line with Angies?? strange Member Comments: we refused to do work with them, it they can't be trusted with the little things how could you trust them with the big things...beware of folks barring gifts, be a smart consumer and know what other charge. !!!!! Company Response: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE....? PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE THE ONES THAT CAN NOT BE TRUSTED... I WAS TAUGHT YEARS AGO THAT THE ONE PERSON WHO COMPLAINS AND DEGRADES A PERSON THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW, IS THE PERSON THAT IS DOING THE WRONG... IN OTHER WORDS IF ONE COMPLAINS THAT THE OTHER IS STEALING, THAN OOPS, GUESS WHO IS THE THIEF!!! SO FOR YOU STATE THAT WE CAN NOT BE TRUSTED, THEN RIGHT THERE, I CAN SEE THAT YOU ARE THE ONE THAT CAN NOT BE TRUSTED... YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW ME, SO HOW CAN YOU SIT THERE AND TELL MEMBERS THAT I CAN NOT BE TRUSTED... I PROVIDED A WRITTEN QUOTE. IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE FRIGGIN COST THAN JUST DO NOT HIRE US.... IF YOU WENT TO THE BIG BOXES (LOWE'S AND HOME DEPOT) THEN WHY DID YOU CALL US.... ARE YOU THAT CHEAP? ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS REFUSE OUR QUOTE AND GO ON WITH YOUR LIFE, BUT INSTEAD YOU HAVE TO DEGRADE OUR COMPANY AND ARE NOW SCREWING WITH OUR LIVELYHOOD…. THIS IS AGAINST THE LAW IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA SO PLEASE LOOK FOR THE LEGAL PAPERS IN THE MAIL… NOW, WE HAVE WORKED FOR YEARS WITH BOTH THE BLUE BOX & THE ORANGE BOX, AND I CAN TELL YOU FROM OVER 11 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH THEM, THEY DO NOT HANG DRYWALL, APPLY TEXTURE, NEVER MIND BUILD WALLS, RELOCATE ELECTRICAL SWITCHES AND/OR INSTALL CAN LIGHTS JUST TO MENTION A FEW THINGS FROM THE QUOTE.... GOD BLESS PEOPLE LIKE YOU BECAUSE HE WOULD BE THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD ACCEPT THE *** COMING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH... YOU ARE A LIAR... AS FOR ANY OTHER MEMBER THAT IS READING THIS, YES, I AM PISSED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THIS MEMBER TO EVEN WRITE THIS REVIEW... AS FOR OFFERING THE COUPON DEAL DIRECTLY TO THE MEMBER, I DO PROVIDE THIS BECAUSE I WOULD HATE TO SHOW UP TO A HOUSE, ONLY HAVE A FEW PROJECTS DONE AND THE MEMBER JUST PAID DOUBLE WHERE INSTEAD, I PROVIDE A WRITTE QUOTE AND THAT MEMBER CAN MAKE THE DECISION ON HIRING US OR NOT… I GUESS THIS IS WHY HE STATED THAT I CAN’T BE TRUSTED… OH, MR. MEMBER, I WILL SEE YOU IN COURT UNLESS THIS REVIEW IS DELETED WITHIN 24 HOURS…

Angie's List Allows Negative Reviews from Non-Customers

I am a sole proprietor contractor. I recently received an "F" review from someone I had never met let alone done any work for. The person had sent me an email inquiry via Angie's List, which I never received and never responded to. The result: an "F" rating. I doubt any small business owners are logging into their Angie's List accounts to see if they have email. No, we are building houses and answering phone calls and direct emails. Angie's List is supposed to send me a notification of when an email is sent, but I never received a notification from Angie's List that I had an email inquiry. Angie's List's response to this: "Check you spam folder." I'm not sure who has time to sift through their Spam Folders looking for notifications of notifications. It's a RIDICULOUS practice. Aside from not having received an email, my main complaint to Angie's List was that someone that I had not performed work for or even had any contact with should not be allowed to submit a rating. They say, "you can respond to the view". As you all are aware, responding to a negative review does not help your rating. Most people will not look past a poor rating. Angie's List is having a negative impact on my small business not because I have an unsatisfied customer, but because someone sent me an email via a third party website that I never received. Not only do business owners need to be aware that Angie's List can HURT their business, those looking to find companies to perform work should not rely on the reviews. They are not necessarily based on work performed!

I have heard of this practice from a business owner recently of the same situation. I find it more on the slander side of the matter.

The person that complained about this business not getting back to them was totally wrong for this slander. The company did get back to them by leaving 3 phone messages that the complainer never checked so they assumed that the company deserved a slander comment.

How wrong, if I were that company I would sue both parties. So don't believe everything you see on Angies List!

Angie's List, Bad Contractor experience, Worse reaction from Angie's List

Hired a contractor based on recommendation from Angie's list to paint the outside of my house. Brother's Painting in Sevierville TN did what looked like a good job initially. Less than one year later their 7-8 year lasting job began to fall apart. Numerous calls to owner Dustin Owenby brought promises to investigate. Finally last spring his brother visited to look at the problem. I offered to participate in the repair if they felt peeling was not their fault. Brother's assured me they would fix it. Months past with spotty response and when I contacted Angie's list for assistance was told by Christian Resiak from Angie's list that because the contractor had stalled past the one year period of action there was nothing they could do. Refused to even contact the contractor to help resolve the issue. In my opinion Angie's list is a scam that takes your money and gives nothing in return. Don't waste your money. Better to fend for your self which, as it turns out, you are doing anyway.

Wrong Category, bad lead, bad review, I never even worked for them.

I fix tile, I do not set tile. But Angies has only one category for all thing tile. So a prospect is given my name for a job I don't do, then said customer is mad at me b/c I won't bid the job. Eh?? I promptly returned the customers call. I do not try to profile customer needs since I do free reviews. I just set up the time and show up. I was on time, dressed well, clean cut, drive a nice truck and willing to provide a free estimate and schedule the job right away. I did everything right. But since Angie gave my name to some inconsiderate ***, I get a C rating?? No wonder the stock has gone from $28 to $6 in less than a year. My advise to anyone thinking about giving them money, contractors and end users alike, don't do it, they methodically deceive both. Do the research, most of Angies senior team has left. All that remains are the rats--always the last off the ship.

First, we would like to say thank you for taking the time in reading this. We hope that our honesty will help in making the decision to hire us.

(Directly or indirectly thru Angie's List.)

Angie's List (AL) is a ONE sided company. We are Service Providers (SP) and yes, I am writing this. We may not hold that status too much longer after this is uploaded, (will update if status is changed) but I can tell you that AL is here for their Members ONLY...

AL states that they have an open forum when it comes to reviews, however that is a COMPLETE & BLATANT lie. AL permits the Members to write whatever they want, whenever they want whether the Service Provider performed work or not.

If A Member states that they call a Service Provider and they did not receive a return call, AL permits that Member to write a review ... What do the SP get? They get an "F" rating!

Members are permitted to upload pictures along with their review, but what do the SP get? Oops, nothing!

SP are only permitted reply to the review but at NO TIME are SP permitted to upload any before and after pictures.

As to refunding a Member... SP do not deal with refunds if we have not performed any work. That is the SOLE responsibility of AL. A few times we had to provide refunds for different reasons, but did you know that Member Services will tell the Member that they HAVE to provide an "F" rating for a refund?

Yes, that is correct! A Member MUST provide an "C-F" rating in order to escalate their refund request... So in the meantime, the SP overall rating is degraded while AL verifies information from both parties. (sometimes it takes days to weeks)

Members pay a annual fee $40.00 (sometimes changes), but did you know how much a SP pays?

Thousands a month! To upload our SP's information without any advertising, that's free. Advertising rates depends upon what the SP wants... (We have paid $60+ - $160+ per month) Now for the Member's Big Deals, that is where the fees go through the roof.

Those fees range from 25% - 50%... (The most we have paid is 40%)... Oh, but wait... SP can not send out Big Deals unless we advertise.

You see Members, when you buy a big deal, we DO NOT get all of the money... Yes, that is correct. When a Member purchases a Big Deal, the credit card information is given DIRECTLY to AL. We, the SP do not see that information WHATSOEVER (Example - A Member purchases a Big Deal for $149.00; SP only receives $89.40) and we do not receive the money for weeks.

Now, with all that said, I would like to state that AL's concept works, Members have saved money, while, yes we the SP's have made money, however it is time that Members know what truly goes on "behind closed door". AL's only takes care of their Members. Angie herself should realize that it s "catch 22". Without her SP's she wouldn't have the business (money) she has now.

Yes, she also needs Members, however Angie is not "laughing all the way to the bank" from the Member's money, it is the SP that helped her do that.

Oh, and we can't talk or even email Angie. We do not have the right to know or are important enough to have her email address or office address.

No relevant service providers in my area

I don't have anything positive to say about Angie's List. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. We were getting ready for a basement remodel in 2011, and wanted to get contractor reviews in the Boston area. What a joke! Most of the contractors we interviewed either refused to be associated with Angie's List, or had paid to be listed but then quit because of the lack of positive response. I stupidly signed up for 2 years, but never got any value from the service. It was truly disappointing. After many months, I just received one of their booklets in the mail. This prompted me to see if I was still paying for this bogus service. Turns out, after the initial 2-year subscription (*** & cheap me), yes, they had successfully charged my expired AMEX card for a third year, and were getting ready to charge me for a fourth! Unbelievable! I went on line to their website today, and found that unsubscribing was a true pain. I will know later this month if they were able to charge my credit card again, but I won't be surprised if they are successful. I find this company to be of little to no value, deceitful, and willing to prey on the uninformed. Consumer beware!!!

Bad Roofing Job Haggled With A Rated Roofing Company for 1 Year

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
The roofing company has a front guy that gets the contract and then sends roofers. My roof leaked, the shingles are curled and the roof has sunken spots. I complained for a year and finally filed complaint with Angie's List and BBB. I posted pictures of the poor roof job at Yelp and YP.com and at Angie's List. They guy finally gave me a FULL REFUND in exchange for removing the postings and complaints. The BBB shows it as a resolved complaint; Angie's list deleted it completely. I will not renew membership because I spent a whole year haggling with this guy, the roof was a mess and he still gets to keep all A's at Angie's List as if he has perfect service. I let the AL agent know that Angie's list is not reliable if they just delete the complaint like the contractor requested, but they did not respond to my email. I am still a member, but once it expires, I will not renew as I no longer trust Angie's List. I am sure this is not how she wanted the company to end up when she started it. I cannot post the pictures or name the company because it is part of the agreement to get my refund of the full amount paid for my roof. I am hoping Angie sees this so that she can do what BBB does and show "problem resolved" instead of deleting the whole dispute as if it did not exist.

Preferred solution: Nothing. I am satisfied with other referrals. I just want ANGIE to know a legitimate complaint w/pictures should never be deleted and wish her luck, but policy of deleting bad reviews cancels her promise of "reliable" reviews.

Vindictive people put bad reviews. What happens when you do a good job for a very unhappy person that is never going to be happy and they wright a bad review.

It works as long as the Trolls Keep Out.

I used Angies list and it worked for a while then I didn't go to an estimate and had to call and cancel in advance, the woman wrote that I had done the job and was unhappy... I never even met this person.

Esselstrom Construction P.O. Box , 1301 Phoenix, OR 97535. Phone 541-261-**** lists on their website that they are strongly recommended by Angie's List! Well Angie may do so I do not from experience, I would not suggest this firm to anyone! They did not complete the job! They left a portion unfinished and I had to hire someone else to complete the job! The owner, is very rude, belligerent, rants 7 raves (personally I feel he is mentally unstable) and does not give anyone a chance to say a word. I to regain my expenditure to complete the job, had to take this person to small claims court! That is where we are at this point.
