Between talking to a live person in 2 different departments and emailing 5 different people, no resolution as of today!

I just found out last week that I owe back taxes for a vehicle that I purchased in 2022 after receiving a phone call from someone in Carmel, IN. I was not aware that I had to pay property taxes on the vehicle 2022 Nissan Sentra that I sold May 2022.

I never received a notice from Beaufort County tax office. When I looked online, it shows that there was not anything sent out for 2022. I have since moved out of the state thanks to a man that I didnt know, broke into my house and me being scared to stay in that town.
When I spoke to Beaufort County Monday, I was told that there is $150 penalty. I promise you that if I had received a bill, it wouldve definitely been paid before the due date which was May 31, 2022.

However, now that its past the 120 days theres $150 penalty that I have to pay since 2022. I have been on disability due to back surgery and unable to work. Beaufort County tax office said they only send out 1 notice, and
I asked if theres any possible way that the $150 fee could be waived this one time. With my disability check and the Medicare insurance coming out of it, only leaves me $1374 to live off of per month.
I was told to call the tax assessor because they are the only ones that can determine if they could, so I called them and was told that I would need to call the auditor and they told me that it would be up to the DMV.

After emailing SC Treasury, auditors, DMV, i unwillingly called the collection company to just pay it and be done with it, since nobody could (or would) help me. Then AFC tells me that theres an additional $15 fee for paying over the phone PLUS their fee $67! I refused to pay it, and said do what you have to do. I filed a complaint with the BBB yesterday.

I just find it amazing that the collection company never tried to contact me for 2 years until AFTER Beaufort County decided to start charging the $150 fee February 2024. I am so PISSED that Ive put notice about them on Yelp, Beaufort website, BBB, and now you, and trying to find out who is above the Treasurer, so I can email them next.
