Complete and utter fraud

I went in on two auctions. In the first auction, I had "won" a wooden Bombay box for less than $7. The delivery company that contacted me quoted $95 to send it to me. When I tried contacting both 888 Auctions and the shipping company, I received no response. I was...

Auctioneer refused to provide provenance after auction.

In June, 888Auctions had an auction that allegedly featured the large collection of a southern Ontario estate. Artists included Chagall, Bluhm, whanki and Miro. Each listing said that limited provenance was available. Moreover, each listing stated: All lots that do not carry established documented provenance nor any past record of auction history record are described in the catalog as attributed. Because all the listings indicated that provenance was available and none were described as attributed, I was convinced that the auctioneer had some established documented provenance supporting the legitimacy of the works. Further, I wanted to buy pieces from 20th century abstract painters, many of whom were not well-known, and certainly nowhere near the level of Chagall or Miro. I didn't think there would be a high risk of counterfeiting. I bid on and won 10 works for a total of $2800. Following the auction, 888Auctions refused to provide any information whatsoever, even withholding the name of the estate due to confidentiality concerns. In my final email, I asked them to provide ANY information that would help demonstrate they werent simply working with a large counterfeiter. They never responded.

User's recommendation: AVOID. I also bought 3 alexandrites from them. A jeweler believes the accompanying certificates were forged.

FORGED ARTWORKS

Update by user Oct 23, 2020

I have contacted the Ontario Auctioneers Association, The Ministry of the Attorney General Ontario as well as Interpol and US authorities.Company refuses to pull artwork when contacted by known authenticators and art experts.

To Whom It May Concern I am writing to inform you that 888 Auctions based in Ontario, CA is knowingly and willingly selling forged artworks on the liveauctioneers, Hibid, invaluable & Proxibid online auction platforms, among others. I have contacted the Ontario Auctioneers Association, The Ministry of the Attorney General Ontario as well as Interpol and US authorities. They are purposely defrauding customers all over the world and all auction sites that list their goods are complicit in their scheme.

User's recommendation: DO NOT BUY!!

Auction House should list artwork appropriately. "In the manner of" NOT "Attributed to"

They refuse to take it back

Original review posted by user Oct 30, 2019
Bought a Freida Kahlo print on a August16, 2019 auction and when I received it a month or so later I found it in unexceptable condition. The catalog photo had been filtered to appear in good condition. In fact, when received I found the print to be filthy and totally unacceptable. I contacted them and the refused to accept a return. I'm out $366 plus $7500 in shipping costs. Do not deal with these scammers.
