I arrived at the airport early to try to switch to the next earliest flight 551 pm, as opposed to 8pm. The 8 pm flight had 17 empty seats. I had NO carryon. They said it would be $50 to change!. Why?
The flights are identical except for the times and both had empty seats'. This tells me that they would rather collect the $50 than make a customer happy?.
I will go out of my way to pick another airline next time?.
NOTE: The attendant at the gate told me to try the "Special Customer Service" desk;. I checked with them and they gave me the same BS story, and told me there was no way to bypass the upcharge".
I can't verify this for sure, but coworkers also told me that you can switch for free if you are a silver, gold, platinum traveler, etc".
There is no justification for charging more when they are going to send an earlier flight off with 17 empty seats?.
No wonder the airlines are suffering these days - customer service is non existent. 301c30a

I know I made the mistake and I know there should be some fees involved with making a change for stupidity, but when those fees cost MORE than the original flight, all customer concerns and customer satisfaction goes right out the window. All American based airlines have been unprofitable for the past 40 years, all but about 10 of those years, and they wonder why.
They don't need my money and I am no longer willing to spend my money on a business that doesn't care about the customers they need to make them profitable.

That's why the airlines have different prices for the exact same seat on every flight. There is the cheapest option which is non refundable and has change fees. Then there is a more expensive fare for the exact same seat but it is fully refundable without any change fees.
So, in the future, if you want to be able to switch flights without fees then you need to pay for it. How unfair would it be for the airline to allow you to change flights without a fee when it charged other people more for the exact same seat so they could have that option? Let me put it another way, if I paid more than you did for the flight so I could have the option to change without a fee then the airline went and let you change flights without a fee after you paid less than I did for a ticket I would be pretty PO’d…
