LA Fitness - LA Fitness Personal Training SCAM!

I am a of LA as of March 4, 2009.My intentions going in were originally signing up basically for the $29.99 a month membership.

Upon discussion with the manager about various membership options I was also informed of how beneficial the can be. I was open to a few training so I then was sent over to the office of the manager of personal training, and he went over some of the personal training plans that they have. I was very apprehensive to agree to any of this due to the high cost of training but he kept negotiating with me until we came to some sort of an agreement. He told me what he could do for me and this was the plan: $160.00 for 4 training sessions a month and an additional free 12 sessions just for signing up, totaling 16 sessions.

He then told me that If I wanted to reach my physical goal I would probably need a year of personal training. I was interested but explained to them that I am an unemployed, college student and that I was not sure if I could afford $160.00 a month for a full year. He then explained to me that I could sign up for a year of training at $160.00 a month and if I ever wanted to cancel I would just have to cancel 30 days before the next payment is withdrawn!. After a month of training I have decided that I want to cancel the training and just continue with a regular membership".

So today I called and spoke with training manager and explained to him that I want to cancel training due to finances and just that I didn't want a trainer anymore and he said that he would freeze the next 2 payments so I can think about it before I really just cancel/. I agreed to it and then this evening found I had a $30/.00 charge on my account.. I called and spoke with him again and he explained that there is a $15!.00 charge for every month the payment is frozen". I was upset when he told me this because he never informed me of this when he placed the freeze and I didn't, and would not have agreed to this charge/.

I then told him that I want to cancel my training all together and he told me I can't or I will be charged for 50% of the remaining 11 months of training (approximately $880.00!!!). Never was any of this explained to me at the time I agreed to the training. He told me I could cancel anytime! They completely misrepresented what was in "the contract." This is the biggest scam and I am taking them to small claims court.

They are the worst company I have ever dealt with!!!!Beware! 3195baf

Maybe you should have read the contract before you signed it, and done research before hand.

The LA FITNESS in Westwood/Gayley in Los Angeles is the biggest scam! A bunch of scam artists work there. The guy kept following me and harrasing me to sign up for personal training. I told him I only want to do it for a month. He said "Sure, you just pay as you go, and you can cancel anytime!" Now, when I want to cancel it, they won't let me. I called the corporate office too. No help there! On top of it, I injured my back during the training. I am in severe back pain! I tell them that and they just laugh at me! They lie and they are the most careless people I have ever met!

Almost the same Situation happend to me in Los Angeles at the Universal City Gym. I work a lot but i have a very unsteady work situation were I don't know how much or for how long I will work. So I started calling them right away that I was wanted to cancel. I have been calling for two weeks now and in the beginning I was patient then after a week of calling once a week, I started calling several times a day. The poor frontdesk kids appologizing and promising that they had delivered messages. Involving a very nice Opperations Manager form another LA Fitness that actually cared. I finally JUST got my membership canceled through cooperate. And I hope that is the last I hear of this issue.

I agree, total scam. I live in Pittsburgh and went into the LA fitness location at Settlers Ridge today and had my free one hour assessment with a trainer. I knew off the bat that I wanted to work with the personal trainer, and this gentleman asked me what the total amount I could spend a week was ( totally inappropriate) and I said I would like to see the training prices and packages available so I could make a decision, he told me that " I shouldnt pay attention to that, what is a ballpark amount a week) I said again, that I would like to see the prices, and he to refused to tell me, Finally, I said I could probably spend 100 max a week. ( the package for a session 3x a week for 52 weeks is 81 dollars per week--I found out afterwards) after telling him this, he pulled out a sheet of paper, and wrote in pen that the price of 3x a week was 130'dollars a week. ( I didn't know the prices at the time so I thought he was being honest) I thought it was pricey but agreed. After the contract was drawn he told me " I'll tell you what I'm going to do, and you will want to hug me after I tell you this, but you can't because I would get in trouble, but I'll give you 5 sessions a week for the price of 3" Turns out he wrote the price for 5 sessions a week as the price for 3 and put that into my contract without me knowing, TOTAL SCAM. then tried to pull the wool over my eyes. Luckily, my mother works in law and informed me that under PA law you can cancel any contract within 3 business... Show more

Hi, i was a member of LA Fitness and in july i moved where there is no LA Fitness and according to my contract they have to cancel my account but when i asked them they asked me to send a proof of address and when i asked them if i can send my phone bill they said its ok and i sent it but still i was receiving emails for payments, then i contacted them again and asked about the issue then they said they just want either electricity or water or gas bill and they dont accept even my apartment leasing document and then i had to pay 850 dollars to get out of contract and if i dont pay eventually that will effect my credit. LA Fitness is a big scam, its better to join anyother gym than LA Fitness.

Just cancel your card...that's what my banker told.me to do about these recurring billing contracts. I did it with LA Fitness. Companies will bombard you with messages because they vwant your business back, but they won't take legal action. You have every right to cancel your card.

I'd go for something peoarnsl, as well as something else. For the peoarnsl thing, maybe a photo of the two of you, framed, with a letter inserted into the back of the frame? As for the other thing, you could get her a massage voucher (if you can organise one near where she's moving to). Seeing as she's into fitness, chances are she'd definitely enjoy a massage.

What about just cancelling a credit card that the payment is linked to? Anyone heard of/tried it? I'm thinking of going that direction to avoid the hassle all together. When I first signed up, the training manager suggested that option if the training turned out to be a total bust (kind of surprising), and informed me that LA fitness did not participate in any sort of credit reporting.

It's a total scam. They never mention to you that you are locked in for twelve months. I lost my job two weeks afterwards and couldn't even go see my trainer for my first session I was so busy. When I tried to cancel they informed me of the contract and that I would HAVE to pay 1/2 the amount. They definitely do their best to up-sell you a more expensive plan and lure you in without mentioning about the cancellation penalties.

Has anybody had any luck getting out of the contract w/o having to pay the 50%? I called to try and cancel mine explaining I have personal family issues that I need to focus on. That i want to keep my membership but can no longer afford the training. The person I spoke to was exteremly rude and judgmental. On top of that, friends of mine have been kicked out for stopping a trainer from flirting with another memeber, others have been sexually harrassed by the trainers. Overall I am not happy with this gym but am willing to give it one more shot by keeping my membership. I am thinking of no going to corporate to try and cancel my training. Anyone try and/or have luck that way?? :?

I moved to Colorado and there are ZERO La Fitness gyms here. But I cant cancel my personal trainer contract without paying at least half of it off. What a scam! I refuse to pay. They clearly stated I could cancel if I had medical reason or moved. Now they say its impossible? Its sad that you join a gym for health reasons and all they care about is contracts and money. *** LA FITNESS. I will sue if I have to but am not paying a dime.

in the personal training contract it says you can cancel if:

you move more than a certain distance away from a LA fitness location OR

have a doctor's note that says you can no longer train

they explained this when I was hesitant about signing up for the 12 month service and read it in bold in the contract

Hi I have a bad experience with LA Fitness. I sign up for the personal training program for 12 months, but my husband got a good job in a city where there is no LA Fitness. Now I have to pay $600.00 even though I am going to receive no service. I am very dissapointed, so I cancelled everything. I will never go back to them.

So, I joined LA Fitness 3 months ago. Everything started out great and I spoke to the trainer. He gave me my first 2 sessions for free. I thought that was nice of him. Then, a week later I decided to sign up for him to train me..He trained me the next two days and out of nowhere I get an email saying that I have an appointment scheduled with a new guy. I texted my former trainer and he said he knew about it. I assumhed that he chose him because he was off that day. Come to realize I have a new trainer. So, I'm kind of confused. I thought the first one would train me. But I feel insulted because if this guy wanted to train me, he wouldn't get me a new trainer...or is it the system?
Also, I remember that he said, " trust me when I don't like a person I leave them with another trainer and I move on"...
so does that mean that he made commission for signing me up and said forget this chick?
I mean I like the new trainer because he seems that he cares about what I want to accomplish.
I just wish I knew that I was going to get a new trainer.

This happened to be as well. The main reason I signed up was to work with the guy that enrolled me. Next thing I knew i was working with someone else a couple sessions later. "Its part of the program. I write your workouts, and he trains you," he said. He is full of ***.

Same experience. but i was lucky. their system break down that day. so i did not personally sign the contract. The training manager printed the contract and write on the contract and asked me to sign the next day. then i read these complaints online and changed my mind. so i called next day and told me i want to cancel it. he made a hard sell, asked me to try for a week to see what's going on...blah blah blah... i tell him since i do not personally signed the contract, it was not a contract at all. but most ridiculous thing is i received a email from them saying "welcome to the training program" with a FAKE contract attached with a signiture that was not mine!! and they put my card on hold for 400+ dollars for the enrollment for the training program. so i called the manager again and he finally agreed to cancel that thing but ask me wait 7-10 business days to receive a refund. i think several things you need to pay attention: 1) hold your attitude. No is no. never being persuaded. be stubborn!2)don't pick up the phone too often. let them leave messages on your phone. in case you will go to the court, these will be the evidences. 3) don't listen to them. pretend reading the contract and finally find a reason and say no! it is optional. so you have the right to say no.

A very similar experience, with my wife we signedf up for 3 months of training session, 16 in all. We were very specific in that we did not want any more than 3 months and were told no problem. We were also told that we could go on month to month after our 3 months were up if we wished. After I paid for the 3 months they chanrged my credit card two more months until I complained that the contract had ended and they were still charging me. It seems that they automatically put you on month to month you don't opt in but rather you need to opt out. As specific as we were about wanting only three months I find their policies to be less than honest, in fact in order to pull this off they had to have lied to us. This is the type of scam that makes my blood boil. They have agreed to refund one month, not the two they charged for as they say as a courtesy. It would have truly been a courtesy not to have charged us in the first place or refunded both additional payments. I would never recommend a dishonest company like this to anyone. :(

I had almost a word for word experience. You would think that after so many people have had this similar experience the problem would not be on the consumers end. They have their slick way of telling you don't worry about it if you don't like it you can cancel with 30 days notice. Even when you ask about what it says in the contract they say, "don't worry about it. Its just a formality. I can take care of it for you." Not to mention how difficult it is just to cancel anything with them. I called them on the phone to cancel and they said I would have to come in. I went in and they said I have to write them a letter..... THAT IS RIDICULOUS!! They seem to have no problem signing you up for ANYTHING right there on the spot! The other part you should know is when you don't cancel your appointment with your trainer within 24 hours of that appointment they charge you for it and the trainer does not even get a single penny..???.. So why was I charged? What did it effect? THIS GYM CORPORATION IS A HUGE DISHONEST SCAMMING DISAPPOINTMENT IN MY OPINION!!!. When I was signed up for the training I was given a good deal and the guy said that I would have to pay monthly and whatever I did not use would roll over to the next month so I could double up on sessions. I now have 14 sessions paid for unused and have to move to a rural area of Colorado where it is no where close to an LA Fitness. I explained that to them and they said I would still have to to pay for the rest of the sessions to... Show more

There is no scam going on, if you listen to the whole pitch everything is there. I just went through it and the freeze charge was explained, and so was the 1 year commitment. They are totally up front about the whole thing. And if you don't want to do it they shake your hand and thank you for your time.
