Fred Meyer - Fred Meyer Senior Discount Day set up to harm seniors

Fred Meyer has a senior discount day on the of each month. So, seniors like me make a big shopping trip and save $10 to $30 on FM's already good prices. Management requires you to tell clerks that you are a senior, even if you know the friendly clerk and the clerk knows you are a senior and you are in line with five other seniors. The friendly clerks often start talking to you and then they 'forget' to scan the senior discount.

Note that their ads say, "Just ask your for the senior discount." That's too funny, seniors remembering something like that after barely being able so shop.

When they forget to give you the discount, you have a to go to customer service. Today the sales clerk forgot to give the discount to the person in front of me and apologized and told the customer to go to customer service (they didn't, the customer was ticked) where customer service would manually hunt through the invoice and key in each item and then hand back a refund. The first thing I told this clerk was I was a senior. She said she would scan the discount code. We got to talking about nothing and general and the sales clerks last words to me were..... you'll have to go to customer service to get your refund.

At customer service, DeeDee, a ten year employee asked me to get the stuff out of my three bags of groceries. I started to hunt and peck for the items, but I realized how *** the request was and that could manually input the item numbers just like the last time this happened to me. (Plus Dee Dee was a little rude, probably because she hates ringing up the refunds manually). Oh and customer service should know that you have to remove the top layers of merchandise to see whats on the bottom, and the counter is the best place to put the stuff.

I was a little frustrated, but I thought this senior discount scam isn't Dee Dee's fault. Dee Dee didn't tell the employees not to ask customers if they are seniors and Dee Dee can't control a sales clerk who forgets to scan the discount code even though the sales clerk was told. So I was handed two bucks and some change, which I thought was a little light. But the line of ticked off seniors was behind me was getting huge and I thought it best to leave.

I got home and the credit receipt she stubbornly gave me, only because I asked, was a credit for over six bucks and she hadn't even rung up all of the eligible items. I take responsibility for not checking the refund receipt, but those seniors behind me were hot....

Anyway, what a scam. Can you imagine all of the seniors who go on the and think they are getting their refund automatically!. Maybe they think the refund is tied into their rewards card, which it should be". It's big bucks, trust me!. Just talk to the clerks on Senior Tuesday.. They say it happens all of the time.. Then talk to customer service folks like Dee Dee/. But watch out, she might rip off your head/.

Fred Meyer management should be ashamed of themselves for their management of this policy:. And they should send all of their seniors a big fat check every year. 31258ac

I truly believe the issue is not the checkout clerks or the customer service clerks. The issue is that Freddie's policy for "mistakes" made by cashiers (or customers) even if it is right after you have paid is to go to customer service.
I live in tax free Oregon and sometimes shop in Washington. At the check out, I tell the cashier immediately that I am an Oregon resident. One day, we filled out the form and proceeded to check out (I had $120 worth of bird seed). Quite often, it is not obvious on the little computer screen what the total is. Well, the cashier forgot and charged tax even though she had just taken my driver's license and filled out the form. Guess what? She couldn't just correct it there of course. I had to push 160 pounds of bird seed to customer service and get the tax taken off. I was furious, not really at the checked-out checker but at Fred's policy that doesn't trust their cashiers to make decisions about any returns. It seems obvious that for mistakes or oversights made at the register and caught immediately, like overcharges (which happen a lot at Fred's), senior discounts and tax charges, the cashier should be able to cancel the transaction, back out the overage and move on. ***, ***, policy sending everyone to customer service where half the time they still need the approval of another person to deal with the issue.

I too shop at FM on senior days and find that it isnt worth the effort. My last trip..one item was discounted the second was not because of computer err. Well the store made alot extra on that day. Then I was informed my kroeger meat purchase was not elligible. Well make a list of all those things that are not elligible for the discount so all of us can see. With my military id card i can receive a ten percent discount at Lowes and Home depot every day on every item. Fred Meyer or Kroeger...your deal is no deal

I've never been treated badly by a Fred Meyer employee, but I do need to say that, being UNDER 55, I was a bit offended to find the "OVER 55 discount" added to several of my items. Maybe she was just being nice, but I have a hard enough time just being 52!

Seriously. Obviously this person has way way too much free time on their hands to write a 2 page rant. Get over it, so what you have to ask. So what you had to go thru your bags at customer service. Next time ask, just ask for the discount in advance. :cry

Apparently you lost focus while reading and missed this key point: "The first thing I told this clerk was I was a senior. She said she would scan the discount code."

Having worked one of the most demanding jobs of retail, customer service for 30 years, I can tell you that I have never experienced a rude Fred Meyer employee. They are all professionals and do an excellent job dealing with the endless stream of customers.

All I can say is that I too have had people get upset when I ask about the senior discount. So we can either ask and have upset customers, or not ask and have upset customers. It is truly a catch twenty two. They have recently created a little card that they put up now on senior discount days, next to the credit card pin pad so as to remind those that would like to take advantage of the senior discount days. Also I must tell you, that having patience is important, unless you yourself have worked any sort of retail or service job you will never understand what it is like. AND I REPEAT NEVER.

Suggestion re Senior Discount: Maybe it would be possible to add a code to one's Rewards Card code so that when the checker scans it, the Senior Discount would be automatically applied. Sure, it would involve giving one's age when applying for the Rewards, but you'd have to admit seniorship anyway to get the discount manually.

The honest truth is that we are told not to ask because frankly some seniors get genuinly pissed off about it. I, when still a new cashier, gave a clearly elderly lady her senior discount and she proceeded to *** me out for making assumptions about her age. She told me I was horribly insulting and how dare I call her old by giving her the discount. The honest truth is I like to save customers money and always scan coupons customers forget, and give them senior discount whenever I think I can get away with it (can reasonably claim I thought they were of age). And as for it being a fred meyer policy not to scan coupons if we're not told to - sorry but that's incorrect. That is a KROGER policy that we are "forced" to uphold, though few of us honestly stick to the rules. And that's fine if you want to go to the store that won't give you the sale price unless you sign up for their *** *** card. Now THAT'S a scam. I stopped shopping there years ago because of that, not to mention the fact that they are more expensive. And hey, at least we offer a senior discount. It's not like we have to...

I have worked for FM for 16 years and have never been instructed to not offer the Senior Discount and I also do not instruct associates to do either. There is a recent shortcut for us to fix this at the Customer Service Desk that only takes about 3-5 minutes. Please send in a complaint about that Customer Service associate on the FM website so that her manager can coach her on proper service.

I don't know what fred meyer you went to or which one that rude employee works at, but if you were to go to Johnson Creek in Happy Valley, you would find friendly cashiers, WHO DO ASK IF YOU ARE A SENIOR on applicable Tuesdays. I work there, and I have never heard that we are not allowed to ask, we just try not to be offensive by asking because some people look older than they are. Also, although it's rare to be sent to customer service, IF you were to be, our C.S. employees are just as friendly and helpful..Give J.C. a try

FM employees comment about the depends is just a fine example of how low customer service in the USA is.

I wonder if the person who made this complaint is one of those customers who always drives employees crazy by their constant complaints.

Note that in the 5th paragraph that I state that Dee Dee didn't tell the employees not to ask if people are seniors. (It's management that does that)

While I clearly blamed FM management for their approach to the senior discount policy that creates so many problems among the clerks, I can see by your comment about 'depends in a bunch' that the FM clerks are not much about customer service.

Fortunately, I can cross the street and go to Albertson's where they don't verbally abuse customers with legitimate complaints.
