Carmax - CarMax Employee Tells it all

  • by   Jan 22

Ok I have read a lot of the complaints that are on here about CarMax and well after a month of working there I can truly say that they are a complete rip off! First they offer you a so called fair price on your vehicle. The reality is that they offer you way less than what they sell it for at a ratio on the dollar, basically if they offer you 5 grand they’ll sell it for 8,000. If they buy it for 11,000 they’ll sell it for 16,000, its a huge joke really. The other day an older gentleman came in with a 2007 Silverado with only 27k miles on it and he got an actual good deal getting 17k dollars for it because the car truly was immaculate. Six days later we turned around and sold it for 25,900. Ridiculous margin, this is just icing on the cake though. Then there are the auctions. The day after they bought that Silverado they went to an auction and bought 20 cars, mostly fleet vehicles. With an average price tag of 3-5k, they got a good deal. Once they hit the lot the average price selling was 12-15k! Ridiculous margins..!.
Now they say they spend 12 hrs with a 125point inspection examining there cars and reconditioning them for sale before they will even put them on the lot, this is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard and is a 100% falsity'. In the service area they have rotations, once they have a dozen or so cars in the incoming inventory area they have a cleaning party, literally!. To bad this party only lasts a few hours, the cars run through a gas station style car wash and comes out at the end with a line of people waiting for it/. Each person in the services area rotates each time they clean to a new item to clean on the car, so one person wipes the windows and another vacuums, and then another picks up trash out of the vehicle|. One person wipes off the hoods, one for one side of the car and one for the other side of the car'. The reality is that not a single person gives any one vehicle any undivided attention;. Notice I did not mention at any point any diagnostic checks or functional maintenance;. There is absolutely no reconditioning going on here! The resulting level of cleaning is comparable to my 5year old son detailing the car. When a car comes in, it may be marked for new tires/oil change or to have a huge scratch fixed but otherwise there is no service done at all. As a salesman It is downright embarrassing, you lie to the customer and tell them how well refurbished the car is, and then you open up the door and the seats need shampooing and there are french fries in the center counsel on a 27k dollar vehicle. This happened to me today, and I cant do it anymore. Absolutely ridiculous....

Now something that they don’t want you to know is that 65% yes 65% of vehicles that they sell have issues within 90 days! And when customers bring them in for "extended service plans" the customer always ends up paying for a portion of the work going well beyond there MaxCare deductible. I was working with the Service Manager the other day and was told that the sales people needed to quit selling it, and that the deductibles should be completely removed because they were very misleading. He told me that 80% of his job was to deal with customers that were pissed because they were lied too! Absolutely ridiculous...,.

Its a scary thought to know that they sell 450K+ cars a year nationally and there customers are do discontent with there purchases. I will say though that as the market dictates and as consumers become aware, that the bull will give CarMax the horns. There parent company was a little company that we all know as Circuit City! If you remember there story, they went bankrupt after a huge expansion in 2009 and closed there doors. CarMax has just set out on the same mission, there planning on opening a new location every month for the next few years.. You think they would have learned there lesson the first time, lol.

To sum it all up, CarMax is a joke, stay away, far far away!

WOW! I have to say I'm pretty embarrassed with myself. Of the top twenty comments showing up on this page, fifteen of them are from me. I've basically been having conversations with myself in all these Carmax complaint files haha! I'm just so angry all the time, and I admit, I have way too much free time on my hands.

But on topic, I have to say since my last comments I've been doing a lot of thinking, and I'm amazed at how unfair I've been to Carmax. They really are a great company. I was just frustrated because sales is a tough racket, and I couldn't quite cut it at Carmax, which obviously left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I've been lashing out on this site for almost a year now! Sorry you guys all had to suffer through that, and I'd also like to offer a personal apology to Carmax as well! Keep up the good work, guys! ,)

Ultimately, I think of Carmax like I think of democracy. It's not perfect by any means, but it's the best option we've got.

Everyday when the sales associates are going to punch in I can see the look that they are not thrilled about going to work. Now that is sad, when an employee is grumpy punching in, and spunky punching out tells you something about your job. The sad part is a manager or LGM will NEVER ask anyone how they like their job? carmax requires (forces) the employees to take surveys, instead of asking them one on one in a file review. You know why? Because the managers and LGM's know darn well that they will get a good dose of the ugly truth! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see what carmax is all about. It's ALL ABOUT NUMBERS AND PROFITS. It's so sad that employees get abused along the way.

Oh yes, everyone remembers Circiut City. It doesn't matter if a company goes out of business, the shareholders still make money. Take carmax for instance, with stocks on the rise and new stores openeing, the shareholders and CEO will stay make money even when carmax goes out of business. They will sell their shares when the stocks start to decline, and just open up a new business. The good old American way to screw people, LEGALLY!

I had a vehicle sold to a customer who was to return to the store the next morning. We had financing in place and all stipulations excepted. Another sales consultant ignored the SOLD tag in my vehicle and took his customer on a test drive. His customer wanted the vehicle. The sales manager honored the sale and I was told to call my customer and let them know their vehicle was sold. They claim customer service is what they are all about. I have been in the retail business for over 30 years. This is the worst service I have ever been a part of. When I finally left we had 30 plus sales consultants. Sometimes waiting 6-7 hours on an ups list. Oh ya let us not forget the shoveling of snow!

Comes down to manager. Sold tags are hit and miss since the information is lacking and they are not removed after 24hrs. I've seen them hanging for days and no notes and the front end take hits on audits because of it. Proper notes in sales manager workbench help to stop this but if you get the wrong manager, it wont matter.

That's right, there should always be notes in the sales managers workbench informing all sales people about the status of a vehicle that has an order built. The manager decided to screw the customer that was suppose to come in the next day to get their vehicle, and go with the "definate" sale. Now there are instances when the "original" customer wont show up the next day to purchase the vehicle BUT that still does not mean the customer should be told the BAD NEWS. Bad news to a customer (done intentionally) is not in the best interest of any retail company. Again, carmax is not about the customer, it's about NUMBERS AND PROFITS, and the manager probably needed to make budget that day, so the CUSTOMER GETS THE SHAFT! This is just another story that ends up negative for carmax.

Rocky, so you and your customer end up on the wrong side of the deal, BUT another customer and another sales associate end up on the happy side of the deal! Either way, carmax and the manager make out like roses. That's what I am talking about for so many months, a very unethical and greedy company.

I would like to bring up another issue I have with carmax. Does anyone know how much it would cost to pay a secretary to answer phone calls, and take messages and set up appointments 7 days a week? Well carmax has figured out a way to have that done for free! The genuises that collect all the big profit can get away with not paying someone to answer calls, at least not sales or appraisal calls. A sales associate sits in the e-office for 3 hours and now becomes a secretary. But management will tell you they are "your customers", but in reality those customers are carmax property. I cant let "my customer" walk the lot and browse, or let "my customer" wait in the waiting room without getting scolded. From the time you punch in, till the time you punch out, you are miserable and fed up with the entire company.

Fellow sales associates have told me that they found fries and napkins and other stuff under the seats in vehicles when showing a vehicle to a customer. I personally have never found a mess, but my point is that how would there be stuff in a vehicle after inspection or cleaning? The only logical answer to me would be someone missed it, right? Well, if thats someone's job everyday, how do you miss stuff in a vehicle? This has not happened just once either. Sales associates will talk amomg each other, and actually tell managers on those ridiculous Sunday kindergarten classes there are problems, but it doesn't matter because nothing changes. Thus, you end up with sales associates that are pissed, because they waste their time showing a vehicle with stuff in it.

At carmax, sales associates are required (forced) to work 5 out of 6 weekends! They are also required (forced) to take the Kompass surveys. Nobody really likes to do either, but then again, carmax has very strict rules that you must obey, or else!

Sales associates really get hammered at carmax. They work all day, and many times earn $0.00 commission, and the managers get a salary and a bonus (when budget is made) Is that really fair? I guess I have not watched enough smart clips! lol

Then the managers have the nerve to "JUDGE" the sales associates all day long! This behavior and work ethic is so wrong. Honestly, it is not important to me at all what a manager thinks of me, I always do my best and I will not agree to be judged by anyone. They sit with you and listen to your recorded phone calls with customers, and judge you on them! They will feed off this power and if you let that poison into your brain, you will be their slave. Remember, this is about the managers having a problem, not the sales associate! Its not my job to sell 10% to keep the managers "happy as a clam"! I do my best and thats all I care about.

OMG. You are full of ***. Its called TRADING you dummy. EVERY BODY IS IN BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY. I wish if I can buy a can of soda for 50 cents and sell it for $10. CARMAX does not force any one to buy a car at a specific price or force any one to trade in a car for a specific price. I am not associated with carmax and I really hate them. But come on… as quality will vary from a used car to another (CARMAX don’t make the cars) I know for a fact that their cars are not that bad. You are just an angry FIRED employee.

Fact: I was not fired. carmax does not make the cars, but carmax does not make all the repairs that are neccessary, either! Can you blame the consumers that are posting complaints on here for having trouble with their vehicles? It's not like their vehicles are breaking down months or years after they own them, they are needing repairs right after the purchase. It sounds like your the angry fired employee! (I am happy you hate them also)

You know for a fact that their cars "are not that bad"? Are they a little bad? Are they sort of bad? It sounds to me like you want to tell the truth about their cars, but are a little hesitant. Have you inspected ALL their cars in ALL the locations? Where there is one mouse, there are many robot carmax worker!
