Big Lots - Constantly given 3rd degree by employees

Customers are to give purses and backpacks to the cashiers or else they are not allowed to shop there. They probably want to cut down on shoplifting but truthfully you can shoplift without those things!.

If your appear bulky, an employee will stalk you throughout the store, stop you, and tell you to unzip and take out all the things from within your bags/. They'll tell you to search your pockets and take everything out.. If you don't comply, they threaten to call the police so it's best not to cause a conflict/.

The employee who did that never smiles?. Never says "How are you?" Never seems to say anything nice to customers,. She only talks to customers when she finds them suspicious,. It's not race related either so don't worry, they do this to all bulky looking or purse/bag carriers..

But then again that same employee said in the usual rude, sassy tone "You do know you cannot wear that scarf around your head?"

She fails to speak in a polite way as usual. I think that comment would be offensive to Middle Easterns to be honest. But I guess they don't want potential shoplifters to hide their identity. They're against wearing medical masks for that reason too and my relative has a respiratory problem.

The prices are some of the lowest I've seen for toys at least. The snacks and foods are priced ok... could be lower. Some of the things like iphone cases and silicone coin purses are WAY overpriced and can be found on the internet for like 1/8th or 1/4th of what they're selling it for.

So... if you want cheap toys and headphones I suppose this is an ok store. Everything else is ok priced... Thrift stores are better... But honestly you have to be tolerant about being treated like a criminal and being stared at. Shoplifters aren't tolerated in any store to keep prices low you know? 38a48af

Original poster here again. I think I was discriminated against.

When I walked into Big Lots for the first time, they told me to leave my backpack on the counter. I asked "Why?"

The cashier said "This is store policy."

This happened at

10415 Saint Charles Rock Road St. Ann, MO 63074
(314) 429-6120

I shopped at Family Dollar and they had this same policy too.

My friends shopped at both Family Dollar and Big Lots and they said this never happened to them. Many other people on the internet said this didn't happen to them. I think that's why some are reluctant to believe.

I'm ANGRY and I feel violated that I had to reveal the contents of my pockets and bag to them. My friends carry huge purses to the stores and they never have this treatment!

For what reason they are discriminating me, I do not know. I wish they were not so mean. :sigh

Hi, this is the original poster again. This review was about Big Lots on 10415 Saint Charles Rock Road St. Ann, MO 63074.

I wanted to clarify that some people hide their purses within their coats because they don't want to leave it at the cashier. I really don't think having a purse would make it easier to shoplift because people automatically target purse carriers when looking for shoplifters. Also you can do it without a purse.

I left my backpack up with the cashier (when going from the library, stopping in this store on the way to going home) She knew exactly where my wallet was kept (which was a red flag) when I went to buy the item when going to the cashier.

I was concerned. I kept my purse. I was scared when they threatened to call the police so without hesitation I took out the contents of my purse and pockets. They took my previously bought items They even took away my can opener that I didn't even buy there and it didn't even say Big Lots on it. (I keep a can opener to open pet food for strays I find)

I didn't have a receipt so I didn't know if the police would ever believe me. I was planning to return some of the items but... I searched frantically for the receipt and realized I dun goof'd and didn't carry it. D'oh.

I was told to leave and never come again or else the police will be called. I don't want anything in the store anyway. They sell things that are nice to have but... are... "eh"

Ok why do people think this is ***? Visit the Big Lots at 10415 Saint Charles Rock Road St. Ann, MO 63074. They do this.

It may be different at your Big Lots. So if it is different, you are lucky.

They do that because the company gives the employee a percentage of what the stolen items are if there able to prevent a theft.

Part of the reason that you may be getting a high "***" factor is because these posts are talking about separate incidents at the same store. If you were treated badly once, why go back for more. You have your right to carry a bag or purse, especially a purse as the employees or the store could be held liable for loss or theft. Not within my district in California have I ever heard of employees demanding that backpacks, purses, or bags be held at the counter. They have been urged to tie a knot in purchases in bags or ask if you would like the bags held at the counter, but they can't legally accept responsibility for them, therefor they can't force you to surrender them at the front. Report this to corporate. As far as being followed, employees are not allowed to make you open anything up unless you have been seen shoplifting, not just suspected. If they suspect shoplifting they are allowed to follow you because they have no authority to apprehend. Only authorized security can. It's supposed to embarrass you into not stealing.

I wanted to clarify because I thought they treated all customers this way and I'm fine with equality. I trusted them to not go through my things because cameras were watching the employees and I assumed they wouldn't rifle through my belongings.

They simply said it was store policy and I accepted that as the truth. I kept returning because it was the closet store to me that had cheap items I wanted until the final straw I had with them.

Recently they clarified they took my purse away because it was classified as a bag, not a purse due to the large size. They did this with my backpack too and I trusted them... :cry

Guys, if you really don't believe me about the bag/backpack policy, go ahead and contact the Big Lots that does this.
