C.A.R.E (Companion Animal Rescue Effort)- who are affiliated with PETSMART. We sadly learned something today.

We would not suggest anyone buy a pet from them. Always read the fine print on the contract that you sign. You are adopting a pet from them, your name is the owner, but they have legal rights to the pet over you.

We almost got a dog this weekend.

Our neighbor got a dog, 2 months ago from them - the contract says the dog is about 2 yrs old and her vet said the dog was more likely 8 years old. Big difference. Anyway, she was telling us about having some issues with the dog's indoor bathroom behavior, and that she had just called the company to let them know that she would be returning the dog the next day. We asked her if we could try the dog to see how she was with our pets and if okay, we could then adopt her.

She called the place to say she wouldn't be returning the dog and they said she didn't have legal rights to the dog anymore and that she must return the dog or they would sue her. We went down there together the next day to discuss it, and they took the dog from her and wouldn't even let us adopt the dog. I expressed that I didn't think they couldn't just take her dog from her and they said that they legally could...it's in the contract. We were all upset.

I got the impression that the workers at C.A.R.E. are only there for the money not the welfare of the dog. Truly a poorly run company with a terrible contract. That poor dog was put back into a kennel and going to be out there to be re-adopted.

I guarantee they will promote the dog with the false age and say nothing about the indoor bathroom issues, just to make money. My suggestion, do your research when looking to get a dog or cat.

We have been lucky ourselves in the past when we got our pets from a friend who had a litter or the pound, and then they were legally ours, period. Hope you never have to get your heart broken like this!

If you are going to return a dog cause it needs training then don't get a dog in the first place. I made that mistake a few times in my youth before I learned that it is difficult work.

However, now there is so much education available though on tv!

I made so many mistakes but now I can train a dog in minutes as I have with two strays currently staying in our apt with us. They jumped, bit, chewed anything they bumped into and in 4 days they know sit, lay down, no and good dog and even to sit before getting their food or getting their leashes put on.

But I've been able to stay with them 24/7 ...plan for getting a dog...take vacation time if you have it and crate train them right away. Positive reinforcement and quick simple communication, uses few words repeatedly and as soon as they even begin to do or stop what you are telling them works wonders.

I have a neighbor who has these rescue or ?. Let's just say there a 7 dogs and I have complained over a 2 year time about the barking for hours at a time no water bowls/food out for these dogs and tired around trees all around the house.

They do not have more then an 1 acre of land. But no one care enough to do something about this situation. And then I found out their kid is a wanted person again. Now I know why she has 7 dogs to warn them when the police or ?

is around the house or near. I can't even garden due to the barking we tied a few time.

I have gotten 2 dogs from rescues. Got one from a breeder.

Those 3 dogs had return policies, and never once had a problem.

My other dogs were a stray and a freebie. This neighbor should not own animals if she can't be patient.

Your *** neighbor only has herself to blame. First, her own *** fault for not reading what she signs.

Second, her own fault for not learning to housebreak. Third, to let you gave the dog, akl she had to do was have them have you fill out adoption papers and do a background check on you. A very well run busines.

Thus was 100% your neighbor's fault. She had a few days to fully read the cintract.

To rescue!

Wow, the whole tone of your reply is harsh and judgemental. Are you a volunteer for C.A.R.E?

Most rescues will take the animal back and try to find it a more appropriate home. But why be rude about it? Anyone can look at a dog's teeth and tell the difference between 2 and 8 years! You won't know the exact age, but you would know that dog was a lot older than 2yrs.

What do you mean by PetSmart has no jurisdiction over an adoption agency's policies and procedures? They have pages of rules and regulations pertaining to the adoption partners. As a matter of fact they basically tell you how to run your adoption program and yet they want none of the responsibility if there is a problem between the agency and an adopter.

Also I don't see where anyone said it was "a horrible dog." Do you always just pull quotes out of thin air? I don't think KJHM99 sounds like a bad person. She is not the one writing the nasty comments. Sounds like she was trying to give the dog a loving home and no one gave her the chance. She should have been screened and evaluated.

I agree here. Not every dog is a fit for every family.

And then you have the issue that the person might have assumed because she was getting an adult dog from a rescue that it might be trained already.

BTW, terrible idea to lie to an owner about the pets age! Most rescues vet at least one time and the docs can give a good estimate of age.

First, it is your responsibility to read a contract before signing it. How silly that an adult would blame a rescue for their own lack of common sense.

Second, ALL rescues require that if it doesn't work out, the animal be returned to THEM, so they can ensure the animal is safe. You have no idea what the criteria is for a good home, so you need to leave this to the experts. Third, most rescue dogs do not come into rescue with full bios. Age and breed is always a best guess, and can be wrong.

Blaming a group that is only in it to save animals is just ridiculous. Fourth, no rescue group is "affiliated" with PetSmart. PetSmart Charities allows them to adopt out animals on the premises, but PetSmart has no jurisdiction over their procedures or their policies.

Sounds to me like your nose is out of joint because you didnt get what you wanted, and that is too bad for you. To bash a group of VOLUNTEERS who spend their FREE TIME trying to find good homes for helpess animals makes you look like a bad person.

Move on. Maybe you just aren't cut out for pets.

I can say on very good authority that Petsmart is NOT affiliated with C.A.R.E. or any other rescue group. The group might use space in the store that has been leased free of charge.

The people in the rescue are volunteers, not employees and I have never heard of a rescue that makes money. Usually it is quite the opposite. Rescues have contracts for many very good reasons. Most likely there was a footnote where it stated that if the owners didn't want the dog or gave the dog away then the group could legally regain ownership. This is done so that people who don't go through the adoption process (namely the process that shows that you will be a good owner) don't get the dog that the group has worked so hard to give a better home. Most of those rules are in place to prevent dog fighting rings or puppy mills from getting new "blood."

The groups are usually run by people who give every bit of their hearts to these dogs. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you want someone who you thought was going to love this dog with all of their hearts too call and say that your baby is a horrible dog and they don't want it any more? And then have those people (who you thought you knew) say that never mind we found a better way to get rid of it? Of course they didn't give you the dog and most likely they weren't very nice about it. But would you be?

You don't know how wrong you are!! C.A.R.E did this to you all because they do care!

When they adopt animals out they want to make sure the animal went to the best of home! anytime you get a shelter animal they make you sign a contract stating if you can't keep the dog please return them to the adoption acency! This is so the animal don't wind up homeless again! Second of all and this is important so listen!

They adopted out the dog to your neighbors not you! You neighbor can tell C.A.R.E that you are the nicest best pet lover in the world but the adoption agency will not let one of there pets go out to someone they don't know! Those animals already had a hard life and they dont want the animal passed down over and over again only to either wind up dead or back in sheletr! They do care about there pets ALOT!

And for your information those people who adopt out those animals dont get paid! They are volunteers helping animals to find homes because they love pets so dont say its because of money!

They don't want that pet going to a bad home! So C.A.R.E did the right thing and any shelter would do the same!
