My sister and I have a duplex house in Long Beach, NY. After Hurricane Sandy hit, our lower level (my sisters apartment) was completely destroyed.

I originally filed with FEMA for my household which is just my daughter and me, later when my sister applied she was denied because they said our address already applied even though we are two different households. When we spoke to FEMA representatives in person, we were told different ways to scheme and eventually told to just lie outright. We had two representatives come, take pictures of the apartment and took an account of the belongings lost, without any direct answers. Three different letters were written with a different response each time and no solution.

It is unfortunate that not only did my sister lose everything but now we are hitting a brick wall because the government agency in existence for natural disasters seems to be unable to communicate and deems them useless. We were also informed that you have to apply for a SBA loan and if denied for a loan, FEMA will reimburse you for loses. The catch is if you have good credit and money in saving your interest rate is higher then those with bad credit and no money, which is appalling.

It is very unfortunate that the government is trying to take advantage of responsible working people in times like this, by forcing them not only to take our loans but charging higher interest rates.

Monetary Loss: $20000.

Location: New York, New York
